THE OBVIOUS PROBLEM

Why is it flopping? It is a remake. There is no originality. I am surprised no one has pointed this out.

reply

i liked the '61 version, (Natalie Wood is stunning there) and admit i haven't seen this on stage etc

i have no interest in ever seeing this one.

reply

Not a remake. Both based on the same stage play. Nobody complained about originality in 1961.

reply

Because no one had seen it adapted to the screen in 1961, right?

reply

I speak of remakes with regards to MOVIE remakes. A similar thing happened with the Psycho remake.

reply

Oh, come on now! If the new film version of West Side Story by Spielberg is not a remake, then I don't know what the hell it is.

reply

The girl who plays Maria in this brain is stunning also, and she actually sings, unlike Wood.

reply

Her voice is not that great! It's too far back and goes flat on many of the high notes, and she has no control over it.

reply

Is it over for musicals now?

reply

It has been over for musicals since the 1960s. The fact that so many people thought "La La Land" was great proves that few people even know what a good musical is anymore.

reply

Lack of originality can't be a reason for flopping when only one of the top 10 box office finds of 2021 was based on original material with the rest part of a franchise or a reboot or based on a theme park attraction.

reply

So you think originality sells?

Look at the top grossing films of any year and check to see if you find more mimicry or more originality.

reply

Not just a remake but also a remake of a classic. Those who know and love WSS aren't going to be eager to watch this new version.

reply

I just saw and prefer the original.in every way except for no.dubbing this time.
