The Dance at the end

simple but it sure put a smile on my face.

great movie.

It is a wonderful smile-inducing moment. The use of Bowie’s Heroes/Helden was simply perfect. Such a great ending.

reply

yeah and I also love that song so that's another plus.

reply

Yes, sung in German added some chill factor to it
And opening it komm gib me deine hand was a real bang

My favorite movie ending of 2019, and maybe the decade or it's at least up there. Marriage Story also had a real good one but Jojo takes the cake. I also got goosebumps from the German version of both 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' and 'Heroes'. It just works so well.

100% agree.

reply

Glad to hear so many enjoyed it as much as I did :)

WATCHED IT WITH THE WIFE LAST NIGHT...WE BOTH LOVED IT,AND SHE IS A TOUGH SELL...GREAT MOVIE.

reply

I hated it. Not only is it a really overplayed Bowie song, but also anachronistic, and felt too like trying to copy Tarantino too much (who himself is a ripoff artist).

reply

It is a song about a boy and girl at the Berlin Wall.

reply

Meh

Just fantastic. It was amusing to start the movie with The Beatles, then to end it with David Bowie and, Heroes in German was just the best.

Notice how just before it fades to black their dance moves match, she smiles at him, and he grins in that realization.

Great ending, I agree. It's always the ones that feel unexpected but also feel right. Jojo's mom said dancing represents freedom and happiness. I(like many) was surprised that the dance moves seem to be from a different era, but the movie does establish a lot of anachronistic zaniness early on. In my opinion it still works here.

The cliche would be for the girl to give him a peck on the cheek and they walk off into the distance together. Orchestral music swells, credits roll. Seen it a million times already.

Taika avoided that cliche and did something that, admittedly, perplexed me at first. "Why are they slowly swaying and not talking? What's going on?" But when that David Bowie music hits, intensifies, and cuts to black, that ending stayed in my mind for a while. Quite an impact.

reply

Anachronistic music and dancing spoiled the period feeling.

reply

And the Beatles in the intro didn't?
