what did you all really expect?

For it to be good? I don't get the argument that just because it's Star Wars/a kid's movie that it is okay if it sucks. I tend to like good movies, even if it's a popcorn flick.

There were some great shots, it's true. Luke and Kylo standing off looked great. I don't really feel Kylo and Rey are interesting characters as I feel they're very under developed, so I didn't care much for their relationship. Certainly I felt the bad outweighed the good.

its a shame that the skywalker fam turned out to be shit

atleast adam driver is a cool actor that does other things than star wars

AP they used Rian Johnson as the writer/director...

someone who was 2 young and just didnt have the experience to make something as big as a star wars movie.

i love looper and brick but the guy took alot more on his plate than what he could handle by entering star wars.

SO what did you really expect?

he did an okay job.. he just made a star wars movie for kids..

I actually didn't expect much as I didn't like Force Awakens, either. And yes, Johnson is too inexperienced for a Star Wars movie. That doesn't excuse anything.

Ben Solo, technically a Skywalker, isn’t really as powerful as expected for someone of his bloodline. Sure he stop a bolt in mid air, but Finn can last against him for as long as he did.Knights of Ren. So Ben isn’t a Sith, he was part of something new that seeks to achieve balance while ruling the galaxy. -> actually they should be the good guys here. We didn’t see his fellow disciples and the Master of the new sect died??

Luke Skywalker. The representation of hope, the poster boy of optimism, turned into a pessimistic sad sob living on an island? After how the EU presented him as a GrandMaster of the New Jedi order, love by millions, and this is what the new sequel turned him into? If Rian directed the Harry Porter movie, Harry would become a begger in the corner of Diagon alley, telling a young wizard looking for magic in a magicless world about how magic ruined his life, and how he cannot die anymore because only voldmort (spelt wrongly because he shall not be named) can end him. It is almost akin to Rian filming a Games of throne episode and call it a kids fantasy movie. Rian must be mad..

Useless subplots. Finn and Rose subplot is useless. Whether they embark on their journey or not matters nothing. The Supremacy will get destroyed either they do it or not. Classic Star Wars would mean the Poe would be proven right and will succeed in letting the resistance escape. But nope, it was not meant to be. What happened to young people doing stupid things and win the day against all odds, because they have hope? What happened to that Star Wars where you bet everything in hope and WIN? Where is that Rogue One moment??No plotline to follow.

The description of Luke Skywalker as simply a one track mind e.g. "optimism" is ludicrous.

Not only is it untrue ("You want the impossible.". "I don't believe it", "I can't do it R2. I can't go on alone." ) it's so eyewateringly trite and reductive that anyone using it as the basis for "valid" criticism or should really just take a look at a lot more movies not to mention life itself.

There is a thing called character development. Those quotes from Luke that you put in are part of that. It establishes a character for him THEN through the events of the films he realizes that he was wrong. Luke would never have said those things at the end of Return of the Jedi because by then he had learned so much about the force and himself.

Let me put it this way:I do not know how old you are but I would guess that you are older than 7. Do you think we should base our opinions of you on how you are now or how you were when you were 7?

*I understand that Luke was not 7 in the original trilogy but the thinking still applies... we are constantly learning and Luke had a whole new world opened up to him just like a 7 year old would.

Character development does not mean that a character who says "I can't do x" never says "I can't..." ever again. Luke says "I can't.." in all three OT films. What happens in ROTJ is that he allows destiny to run its course rather than do anything to pre-empt it. He leaves the rebels on Endor so that he cannot bring harm to them And he resists the temptation to destroy his father in order to save them.

He's learned enough about the force that this time, Luke does not perceive his destiny as being the one to turn Kylo Ren, and so the same scenario cannot happen as it did with his father. Any confrontation will be a deadly one and spell disaster for whomever survives. So he cannot use the same strategy.

TLJ sees Luke using all that he's learned but feeling ill equipped to overcome the situation which is only similar, not the same, as the dilemma he faced with his father. But then he does find a solution. Just like he did in ROTJ.

It's not enough to be a Star Wars film. This movie is a prime example of "the good name can't hide the shit behind it" scenario. It has to be a GOOD story, and have continuity that makes sense. This film had neither, and it's no surprise that the extremely unlikeable person [I would put another name, but this comment might get deleted] who wrote and directed this pile of crap got no less than 3 million death threats on opening day for this film.
