Surprised by the lack of posts about the end of the show....(spoilers)

Maybe this site is slowly dying.

Enjoyed the last season. Found the ending interesting, but thought it would have been best if Tommy walked off with into the hills with Ruby, than a fade out.

Is not a movie in the works?

I hadn't heard that until posting the above. I try to avoid all show related info online until I finish a season of a show.

Thought it had another season coming. Did it end well? I held off watching any further till I was sure it wouldn't be a waste of time.

Maybe some spoilers but not much. This series ended up being nothing like the beginning of the series. They don’t need to do a movie. I bet they don’t. The characters are jumping ship.

How did Ruby become more important than his child with Grace, Charles? That would never happen with Tommy. That child would be cherished. Why did he marry Lizzie - why is Lizzie even around? This would never happen. “Lizzie has never done a full day’s work vertical in her life.” Originally, Knight said he hoped to go forward with PB all the way up until WWII where Tommy becomes part of the upper class and legit. I don’t see that it got anywhere close. There’s talk of a movie but most of the cast members want out. There’s no mention of Grace who really was the most important character to Tommy. Why even bring Michael into the series if his story wasn’t fleshed out. And then there’s maybe 20 seconds of a dead but brought back to life Tom Hardy. Arthur’s life has gone down the tubes and you wonder if the actor’s has as well and maybe that’s why it was written into the script - it crossed my mind. Not verified if course. He always had substance abuse issues but he had charisma and a story. With this he’s just crumpled up every episode. Why did they get rid of May in S2? There was absolutely no interesting relationships at all for Tommy after Grace and May. And then, out of nowhere, they bring in his long lost gypsy son? And what did they do to Finn?

It looked like they just wanted to end this thing in a hurry. Cillian can’t get away fast enough. “I just want to move on.” It wasn’t even close to the brilliance it was once, which makes me think that Otto Bathurst was the genius behind this series. Or is this series cursed as well with the sapphire. And the music isn’t consistent - although I liked One More Silver Dollar by Marilyn Monroe and Patti Smith’s The Red Right Hand. Also, S6’s story of Mitford and Mosley is the most significant in the finale.

He was an alcoholic and cocaine user from the beginning. First season.

I'm sorry. I thought you were talking about Paul Anderson, in real life.

reply

Yeah. Sorry. Didn’t word that correctly. I don’t really know much about the actor except his amazing voice and presence and hair. Great as Arthur Shelby. But I wrote this 7 months ago. I just wondered why they didn’t make use of this great character and actor. He was crumpled every episode at one point.

I guess no one had any opinions as to where this series ended up. It wasn’t as bad as where Dexter ended up but it didn’t end up being great as the beginning. Dexter exploded. This one imploded.

I never understood why Tommy kept Lizzie around the family, either. I mean he marries her after she had his daughter, but I'm not sure why he gave her a job with The Shelby Company.
Regarding Ruby and Charles - Tommy seems to love people more when they've been tragically taken from him. This his obssession with Grace and then Ruby over family members still living. I think because he thinks he is cursed he blames himself for their deaths and is always searching for redemption of some sort

Tommy only loved Grace. There were no others. The most interesting, of course, was May but that ended because of Grace. He would never abandon or not celebrate Grace’s and their child, Charlie. who seemed to disappear. The writers probably should have made their child a girl. It seems most stories with the alpha male and his child are always about the daughter. I can only think the people behind the show might have liked the actress who plays Lizzie and thought we’ll rework it so she become the central female even though it was so implausible. Or they were just out of ideas of who and what to do with Tommy’s love life. There was absolutely no chemistry with Tommy and Lizzie. They looked so funny together. At one point early on, Stephen Knight, the creator and writer of the series, said he wanted to take the series into the future and that Tommy would go legit in politics. Then there seem to be a huge lapse of time between each season. They were having a lot of trouble. One season seemed like it took two years. I think Cillian wanted out. John was mad and got out. Knight had other films to write. And then of course the untimely passing of Helen McCrory - Polly. So they just blew everything up. Literally. That was definitely not supposed to happen with the story-boarding of the series in its early stages. I also don’t think they realized the significance of Annabelle Wallis’ performance and that everything after that seemed lackluster. Just another great series like Dexter gone to dust.

I would've genuinely loved that ending way more.

I didn't hate the one we got, it just felt like a setup for an upcoming thing instead of an actual ending.
