Good acting but no humor

The book had me laughing out loud. The movie, not once. Something was lost.

And why was Audrey not knocking on the window?

reply

I read part of the book on Kindle sample and enjoyed it.

Saw the movie.

Both very good.

Teenage daughter narrated both.

I did not read the book, but saw the movie yesterday. Very unusual, quirky, but well-acted.

My only complaint is the teenage daughter, who deserved to be told off at the end for her mouthy
disrespect for her father. She was right in her feelings, but I would've never let a 14 year-old get away with
that kind of dialogue. And telling the adult next door neighbor "F Y" would've resulted in a two week grounding
with no cell phone if I were her parent.

Audrey had it coming. Bernadette raised an exceptional child, and expects her progeny to speak honest, articulate, intelligent, appropriate English. The FY to Audrey given the background and situation actually checks all the boxes. Ditto for the way Bee talks to Elgin after all the trouble he caused.

Think twice before issuing inane rules to young people we would never impose on ourselves. Bee was in no way a potty mouth and the adults around her (Elgin and Audrey in particular) could all learn a lot from her.

Audrey had it coming, but NOT from a 14 year-old girl. She should've been grounded right here at this moment by
her mother, in front of the neighbor. Later, she should've been taken to task for her blatant disrespect for her
father. True, the neighbor is a nosy phony, and the father is guilty of not spending enough time at home, with
both his wife and daughter. But it was a major turn-off to see this brat act as though she was an ADULT, and had
equal say in family decisions. Kids who getaway with such behavior grow up to be monstrous adults.

Every movie does not have to have humor.

reply

There were a couple chuckles, but nothing necessarily hilarious. It doesn't help that most of the characters are horrible people.

reply

Yep, that's a rookie mistake many "auteurs" like linklter often make: cannot distance themselves from the material and see what s really emerging.
In this case, a bunch of talkative psychos difficult to sympathize with.

reply

If this was supposed to be a black comedy, I wouldn't be bothered by that. But since this is trying to be more like a quirky feel-good comedy on some bestselling book, it feels mean spirited.

reply

I agree again. Like I said, they couldnt see how repulsive these people actually were, which worked against the movie.

reply

I actually found Kristen Wiig the most sympathetic, not that she's great but Blanchett's daughter was out of line with her in that meltdown scene.

reply

The daughter was supposed to be loving, faithful, responsible, stern.
She comes off as a disrespectful little bitch.
The neighbour was supposed to be the ordinary, conformist, realistic contrast to Bernadette's genius quirks.
She comes off as a scheming, hateful old cunt.
I found every character to be out of balance, repulsive and difficult to relate to.

reply

There's quite a lot of humor, actually, but one needs a special sensibility to be able to laugh at it.
