This movie is proof of how Hollywood is solving the diversity issue

The cast is mostly minorities. The theme is about their struggles. Matt Damon represents European influence on their culture and environment. I say great job.

I liked this movie. It's a classic popcorn movie with a big budget and action adventure with gorgeous visual effects. Written and directed by minorites.
6.5/10
The writing is solid. The characters are relatable too. They are working together to accomplish the greater good of humanity. They say what the audience is thinking. They go about problem solving the way the audience would. Awesome movie and a great start to Hollywood diversity.

Why did there have to be a "European influence?"

I've been a fan of Zhang Yimou since "Wo de Fuqin Muqin," and would have watched this even if there had been no western actors. In fact, I would have watched it sooner. There's no "solving of the diversity issue" in this move: that would have happened had it been all Asian actors, and people watched it because it was a good movie, NOT because Matt Damon was in it.

Actually, I felt he diminished it.

But the vast majority of English speaking westerners won't watch non English movies. Which is a shame. One could maybe hope that more collaboration type movies like this could be a good thing and help prevent any decent foreign film being remade by Hollywood.

The thing is you would think there is enough pro diversity people to make those films successful. But I find its not about true diversity some are going for, its more the skin deep variety.

reply

Great analysis lordbishop, I like it, "its more the skin deep variety" which is a shame. With or without Matt Damon, this movie would not be more than average. There are far more better chinese movies than this and with full chinese actors for our "diversity" maniacs. But they just Don't care apparently.

reply

WTF Hollywood? It's a Chinese movie with half revenue from China.

Matt Damon was there just to get extra revenue from the west. Same with the Chinese guy in Rogue One. Diversity is a libtarded concept.

The movie was entertaining, but it also brought out the issue when people scream white washing and white savior crap and they know nothing about the film. I am curious just what the Asian cast thought of that nonsense.

But there is no way to solve the diversity issue because it has questionable merit to begin with and more importantly has no firm goal to achieve. Every person has their own opinion on what is fair when it comes to this and there is always going to be some people that scream it isn't fair.

I'm Asian and I didn't mind with movies with white protagonist in Asian setting with Asian cast. One of my favorite movie is The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise.

The problem with this movie in particular is that it was not a good movie. Not terrible, but still not good. Whether it has white protagonist or not doesn't matter.

reply

No its not a great film, but I was entertained enough. I have certainly seen worse from both US and China. It really should have been better overall because of what they were trying to achieve with it. They really wanted a global movie from China that would play well across the world including the US, unfortunately I think the quality issue as you mentioned did the most harm and it really only did well in China.

Another movie starring white protagonist with Asian setting and cast that I like is Flowers of War, starring Christian Bale. Quite underrated in my opinion. I really liked it.

reply

Yes, this IS Hollywood's typical approach to increasing diversity!

Pandering to the massive Chinese market, while putting a white male lead in there regardless of plausibility.

reply

So the movie is made to appease the minorities in WOODHOLLY.
