Tonight's episode (April 2): Questions

Why did Joan frost her hair gray making her look older? As vain as she was this seems counter intuitive.

Did Joan and Hedda really conduct a campaign to deny Bette the Oscar? Was she that vain and that much of a bitch?

Did Geraldine Page actually let Joan talk her out of attending the Oscars? Was she really that gullible?

Is anyone else about to pass out from the incessant smoking in this show? (Cough! Cough!)

Who plays George Cukor? He looked familiar, but I couldn't find him in the credits.

Do people realize that Oscar is a naked guy holding a sword in front of his package? Does anyone else think that's just a bit weird?

😎

reply

George Cukor was John Rubinstein: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0748270

As for a couple of the other things have a read here: http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/04/fx-feud-joan-crawford-bette-davis-oscars

It answers a lot.

Jovay,
The Vanity Fair article answered all my questions. And I looked up John Rubinstein on IMDB. He's done a ton of work. I know him from somewhere, but I can't remember where. That's one of my hobbies, connecting the dots on actors' roles.
Thanks!

No probs.

Yeah that's why I gave the link on him as I've seen him in some of those shows but then you may have seen him in different ones so was easier to link back.

I looked up that book that Vanity Fair mentions on Amazon and there's one copy @ $4,819.00 wonder if this series will cause it to go into reprint, wouldn't mind reading.

reply

$4,819 for a book? That's not gonna happen.

I was thinking the same thing about Joan Crawford's hair, but then I went to YouTube and saw the actual film clip of the award ceremony and her hair looked stunning: 1963 academy awards

reply

Thanks for that link Jennie! She did look stunning.

reply

Yes she did, but I have a question. Do you think she was beautiful? I've always admired her as an actress, but never thought she was beautiful. Her eyebrows make her look hard, imho.

😎

reply

I am trying to figure out the answer to that question for myself. There is no question she was beautiful, in my opinion, but she was so unappealing for my taste. She seems so artificial. I've always preferred a more natural look. In her era, I prefer the looks of say Ingrid Bergman or Katherine Hepburn. But I think she was a bit older than these ladies. She started in the silent era, right? So maybe my comparison is unfair. She was making movies still into the forties and fifties, where she would have been the contemporary of say, Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner, some spectacular looking women. I guess it depends on what you like. BTW, I think those eyebrows were atrocious.

reply

Joan Crawford was not beautiful or appealing, and her eyebrows were horrible imho. I think Ingrid Bergman was absolutely beautiful; Hayworth, Gardner and Hepburn not so much. Like you I prefer a natural look.

reply

I think most leading ladies or movie stars are beautiful. It's the barrier to entry for a visual medium, mostly true. Sometimes one has a quality that's exceptional, bright red hair or big blue eyes for example, but overall I think they're all way above average in the looks department.

reply

I agree, which why I'm puzzled by Crawford's success as a movie star. Not beautiful, not even pretty imho.
Those eyebrows: ugh!

Do you remember that Seinfeld episode where Jerry had the girlfriend that looked great in certain lights, but horrible in others? Joan Crawford is like that for me. Sometimes within the same movie, I can't figure out if she's beautiful or not. Looking at glamour shots they made of her though, she was very beautiful.

reply

No, I was never much of a fan of that show. To me it was just a group of four whiny, egotistical, self centered people whose chief talent was to irritate me. I know that puts me in the minority, but that's my opinion.

She was glamorous, in the 1950s -60s Hollywood style. Back then (though even today) you didn't have to be beautiful; you had to be glamorous on-screen and off. You had to be able to wear the latest fashions, cosmetics and baubles with style - and she did.

reply

Okay. Glamorous yes, beautiful no.

She had very striking features

I've seen a photo when she was very young. At that point she was almost beautiful.

Hmmm, well, I think a couple things were going on with the outfit. The broadcast was in black and white, and she was making a shimmering, all-over fashion statement with the hair matching the dress and flashing diamonds. It was meant to be seen on a small TV screen where everything would hopefully flash as silver...not up close, in color.

The inherently low class Crawford (mistakenly) thought it was classy to have every item of her outfit match. (She often had shoes, purses and hats made from the same fabric as her dresses.) When she decided on a glittering silver dress, she must have thought it would be stylish to have a glittery dusting of silver in her hair, too.

She was probably just getting carried away with getting everything to match...I imagine.

An excellent analysis, Cookie. "Inherently low class." I think that's the best description of her I've ever heard.

The matchy matchy style is seen as unsophisticated or provincial NOW, like a mother of the bride look at a southern wedding, but in this time period of this show, it was not the same. That was very much the style at the time to have shoes, bag, hat and dress match exactly. It was seen as elegant.

(unsheathes claws)

Listen, b!tch....DON'T YOU TALK TO ME ABOUT HANDBAGS!

: )

Matching things have always been elegant, but true taste dictates you keep the direct matching (say of the same exact fabric) to ONE accessory...a hat, a purse, a scarf. The rest should be in a harmonizing neutral color like black, brown, navy, gray etc.

For instance, even in that period you're not going to find pics of Jackie Kennedy in an outfit where the dress, coat, hat, shoes, gloves and purse are all tailored from the same fabric! But....that was our tacky Joan's favorite look.

smh

I'm just saying, a lot of rich ladies dressed that way in the early 60's.
For interior design it was also a trend at the time, using the exact same fabric on draperies, upholstery, and wallpaper.
Then you could make a dress out of the same fabric and be perfectly camouflaged. LOL
It's definitely not my taste. I don't even like my shoes and bag to match unless both are black.

Haha!

I'm still not completely convicted, tho, pet : )

As far as clothing went, I don't think garments were even sold in extensive matching sets like that...so it would make acquiring all those matching accessories a custom job. And most women who could afford to have all their clothes and accessories hand made had basic taste that inherently told them it was a BAD IDEA....an embarrassment of riches.

It wasn't grey, it was silver glitter. She wanted to be head to toe silver, like a silver version of the Oscar trophy.
You actually still sometimes see this at the Oscars- actresses dress in all gold when they are campaigning hard for an award. It happened this year with Emma Stone, and she won.

reply

Oh you know, you're right! I remember that now.

It was very much the style and very common at hairdressers at the time, along with the bouffant hair styles.

People did a lot of crazy things back in the 60's. I know. I was there.

I was there too.
