Oscar nom

For score

Probably win so to give John Williams a final oscar , then again Oppenheimer might win

Even if you don't like the movie, the music is good. I would also give The Room an Oscar, if it had music by John Williams.

reply

One of the only things I liked about the movie so I say it's deserved.

53rd oscar nom. The academy just loves John Williams. As I do but I think there is not enough fresh original material in the score for a nomination.

reply

John Williams deserves it.

The win could also go to R. Robertson who died last year for Killers of the flower moon...

Dead man can't celebrate! I think, they rather give the song the Oscar as the score. If the academy had been thinking of him as a great composer, they had give him a chance during his life time.
Göransson already got one Oscar, is young and is basically already Disneys replacement for Williams.
Karpman already got a massive nod by the nomination, I doubt this jazzy score will win.
Fendrix is young and will probably get more chances.

Williams got his last Oscar 30 years ago, never got any for Indiana Jones. This is basically the Thank you for everything. Likely the last chance, like Morricone in 2016. Better to give to him the real thing as next year just the lifetime Oscar.

But just objective I would give the Oscar to Göransson, his music really had impact. Robertson soundtrack was good, but didn't carried the movie. Fendrix performance I will watch on Friday, Karpman would fail with me as I don't like Jazz much. And Williams? The soundtrack was good, but ultimately just a rehash of his great classic Indy soundtrack.

Lifetime Oscars usually go to Nominees that never got the recognition they should or have had 5-10 nominations but never won. None of these options meets John Williams. He has already 5 Oscars.

This is just another last hurra for him as he told that he had retired.

@Dead men don't celebrate: There are plenty examples of postume oscar wins - remember Heath Ledger for e.g.

reply

Williams had in the last 30 years 18 nominations, if he does not get one, he for sure qualified again. ;)

reply

Sounds plausible.

RedLetterMedia in their review were talking about how the score sounded flat and were wondering if John Williams really wrote it or if it was just one of his underlings. He is 91 years old. They even joked that ChatGPT wrote the score.

reply

I agree the score was not memorable and most of the best parts were altered tracks from Last Crusade. Felt the same way about the Star Wars sequels too.

reply

He wrote the Helena Theme for sure, and many of the sub-themes are derived from it. What I think was somewhat lacking was a distinctive theme for the Dial or one for Voller. We got a Nazi Germany theme but not a Voller theme, or at least not one that wasn't as memorable as past villain themes.

John Barry has won the same number of Oscars (five) with only a fraction of the nominations. It would be nice if Williams could get at least one more than Barry, but the Academy seems to value off-beat scores over more traditional ones. Midnight Express and Chariots of Fire beating Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark respectively are examples of this. Robbie Robertson will win posthumously, mark my words.

I think the sequel scores got nominated mainly to make amends for the shocking and embarrassing lack of nominations for ANY of the prequel films.

reply

Oppenheimer won as expected
