Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is projected to whip up $60m in its opening weekend in North America (3-day) and $82m through Tuesday’s Fourth of July weekend. Internationally the film earned $70m from 52 overseas markets for a 3-day global weekend of $130m.

‘Indiana Jones’ & The Box Office Of Doom: Why ‘Dial Of Destiny’ At $60M Opening Isn’t Setting Records For Franchise Finale

Even though Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is looking to hit the bottom rung of its tracking projection of $60M Sunday morning, there’s no question this is a disastrous result for the finale to a historically beloved franchise film. C’mon, Indiana Jones is one of the reasons why Disney shelled out $4 billion for Lucasfilm. Global start here at $130M, is $10M less than what we were seeing; Nancy will have more. The fan-loathed Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull had a $272.1M global start, unadjusted for inflation/currency swings back in 2008.

A few things to stomach: Not only did Star Wars bomb Solo open higher than Dial of Destiny, with $84.4M 3-day/$103M 4-day, but so did Paramount’s seventhquel Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ($61M).

How could Disney and Lucasfilm mess this up?

Kind of shocking to think it might be another Solo 400m ww total gross

1. Harrison Ford did two TV series this year, 1923 and Shrinking. He’s overexposed.

2. Crystal Skull aside, Harrison Ford stopped being the sole top billed star of big Hollywood movies in 2002 with K19 The Widowmaker. A 21 year old would have lived their entire life without seeing Harrison Ford carry a movie.

3. Any big movie Harrison Ford did after K19, aside from Crystal Skull, has been a two handler where he paired with a much bigger younger star. Josh Hartnett (Hollywood Homicide), Daniel Craig (Cowboys and Aliens), Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049). All those films also flopped.

In short, the problem with this film wasn’t that they made a $330 million Indiana Jones movie, the problem is that they made a $330 million Harrison Ford movie.

Currently 250m. wonder if it can make it to 300m?

The Flash is expected to tap out at around 300 (currently 260)

Crazy to be talking those numbers when they were were both expected to do a billion.

And its strange to think the legacy sequels to the two movies that ruled that great summer of 89 (both doing over a billion when adjusted) bombed so bad

reply

Currently 258m.

just broken 300m

Just double that figures and it will at least break even :) . Which is completely impossible with the crashing figures week to week.

I really liked The Flash, such a shame it didn't succeed. And whilst I'm not an Indy fan, it is sad to see such a beloved and previously successful franchise fail.

The latest Mission Impossible opening weekend has done about 250m ww which is pretty much what Indy and Flash have done in their entire runs so far! (Flash is pretty much done now with 263m total. Indy should get to 350m, but 400 is uncertain).. Yet movie sites are moaning about MI underperforming! (it will probably still get up to near the previous 3 MIs 700-800m due to overseas box office)

reply

I've read that Indy's overall budget was about $100m more than The Flash, so I guess their losses will be about the same.

reply

You would lose that bet....lmao...

reply

Yeah it gonna struggle to make it to 400 (MI3 box office. but that was 2006; about 600m when adjusted)

now at 368.

wow

#IndianaJones5 with Harrison Ford will end its run making less at the box office than a #HanSolo film without Harrison Ford
