In the 60s we had 2001, now we have a Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence...

... vehicle.

Does this say bad things about where we are heading?

Or perhaps we should view this lacking in diversity horror show as a strange artifact of a time now past. A casting which simply wouldn't be allowed / accepted by Hollywood anymore. Five years on, a final "roar" of a white supremacist film industry?

reply

Everything is always about "racism" with you fools..

reply

Oh generally I'd agree but come on - even look at the poster. It's embarrassing, you could almost use it as the poster for the sort of pure genetics / white supremacist march that Drax from Moonraker would have been a big fan of.

Really surprised this got passed / made only five years ago now...

reply

But Drax wasn’t racist. His chosen people all had one thing in common: they were physically beautiful and healthy. Their race didn’t play into it. (Unless you want to argue in bad faith that there weren’t enough non-white people or something equally stupid down that line.)

reply

These fools see racism everywhere because they've been radicalized by other racists.

reply

“You fools”?

RACIST! CANCELLED!

reply

Yey!

reply

If it says anything about where things are heading, it's in a positive direction. "Passengers" is an entertaining movie. For anyone but the pretentious, "2001" is a steaming turd of a bore.

reply

This.

I'd love to watch people who pretend 2001 is amazing sci-fi actually watch it. They'll be looking at their phone for 90% of the film.

My fav part was when the monkey threw the bone into space! After it encountered some sentient computer and combined with it, it came back to Earth and started doing bad stuff. Science!

reply

Nonsense. It's a visually stunning film.

Here is Beach House's Space Song, which has had 2001 visuals used as it's video:-

It's a great song. One of their best...

You are severely mentally retarded. Maybe you’re the one who hasn’t seen 2001. Watch it, you’ll fall in love.

reply

I have seen it. More than once. It sucks.

reply

I enjoy 2001 but it is slightly anachronistic viewing nowadays with it's almost exclusively white cast in what is supposed to be a futuristic setting (yes, the 2001 part has long since flown).

It's hard to imagine a sci-fi future where we have space ships, etc yet still have white people not being something of a rarity. Surely in the future most people will be of mixed race so I find the immersive quality somewhat lost and it takes me out of the film a bit...

reply

It must be extremely exhausting being the opposite person of “I don’t see color.” Do you leave the grocery store if it’s too white or too black?

reply

I'm not one of these people in here who get all bogged down on color and get upset whenever black people get cast in "white" roles. In fact, quite the opposite - I've made many posts pointing out how ridiculous it is...

But that's different from the point here, which is that in the far off future of 2001 most people will be racially mixed and therefore seeing either a purely white person would be just as ridiculously as seeing a purely person of color.

Therefore the immersiveness is somewhat lost as you can't help but viewing the piece as a product of it's more "racist", if you want to call it that, time.

I feel the exact opposite. 2001 is a gorgeous film. Every frame demands your attention. This was hot garbage visually. The entire movie looks like it was greenscreened and Lawrence can’t act for shit so it was extremely comical in that regard. Never mind the telegraphed plot. If the ride is gonna be boring at least let the movie have some charisma.
