I’ve only seen the 54m version. Maybe when Chaplin re-edited the film in the 70s for modern audiences there was something more obviously “offensive?” As for the 54m version I think both the religious right and the insanely stupid left would find it hard to be offended by The Kid. Though I wouldn’t put it past the latter to come up with something (not enough minority/trans representation, misogynistic because it paints the mother in a bad light, etc.) I’m happy to see where they go with it. Rogue and Magneto had a very brief and mostly off-panel flirtation circa Uncanny X-Men 274. And they were together in the Age of Apocalypse universe. She also had a flirtation with Magneto’s young clone, Joseph. In Uncanny X-Men 341 Joseph used alien technology to inhibit Rogue’s powers so he could kiss her (just on the forehead, but who knows—what happens between panels stays between panels, am I right???) They can easily come up with some technobabble way for Magneto’s powers to inhibit hers. Or just say he puts on a magnetic ultra sheer body condom. Who cares. It adds a wrinkle, some drama, and gives Rogue and Gambit something to do in the show. Growing up I always expected for Gambit and Rogue to finally kiss only to discover that his energy producing powers cancelled out her energy sucking powers. It makes so much sense in my mind for their powers to cancel each other’s out. Or they could have discovered they cancelled each other’s powers out because they were cousins a la Black Tom and Banshee! They are from the south, after all! They do need to sharpen the dialogue. Wolverine’s “weight loss” line ranks right up there with Storm’s cringey line from X-Men 1 (“the same thing that happens to everything else.”) Was that the best the writers could come up with?! Sad. I hope they manage to bring in Shadowcat, Nightcrawler, Archangel, and Iceman (sans his new Drag Race personality, obviously.) Shadowcat would have made more sense in the role they gave Sunspot, actually. Especially since they’re currently mining the comics circa Uncanny 200. She played a big part in the trial of Magneto, actually, in part because of her Jewish identity. I’d also like to see Psylocke, Dazzler and Longshot. But with only 10 episodes a season it doesn’t seem like they can do much. The cast is already pretty big. I hate Disney too because they exclusively produce garbage these days, and I FULLY expected this to suck mutie balls, but I’m pleasantly surprised! The animation is by far the worst thing about it. It’s so fucking cheap looking. There’s no defending it. Moving on! PROS: I am shocked Cyclops has come off so well. That-and that alone-is an improvement on the original. I expected them to make Scott look dumb in an effort to make Storm look better, but they actually made them both look great. I’m an X-Men expert and this story feels unpredictable. It’s similar to TAS in that I can see where they’re mixing and matching elements from but I don’t know where they’re going with it. I like that. Of the characters with new looks: 1) Magneto looks fucking terrible. The giant M costume never looked good but the Bon Jovi hairdo really makes it look ultra stupid. 2) Morph’s new svelte look is out-matched in retardedness only by his voice. He looks more like the Exiles morph, but not in a good way. They really are taking too many liberties with him. A character named “Morph” should change, sure, but he’s so far off-model that he’s no longer the same Morph from TAS. 3) Storm’s haircut does look dumb with her white Jim Lee costume. The mohawk is from the comics, yeah, but it only looks good with certain costumes. It’d look better if her costume was the black version from the Fall of the Mutants era. Although, the voice actress sounds so creaky and old, the mohawk probably wouldn’t feel right. 4) At least Bishop got a good haircut. Voices: I really miss the original voices for Magneto and Scott. Jean Grey’s original actress now voices Valerie Cooper and she sounds like she wouldn’t be able to pull off the Jean voice nowadays. I heartily miss Jubilee’s original voice. What a dumb move, caving to some vague PC bullshit before anyone even complained. And Sunspot can’t act for shit. Overall, I’m happy. The animation sucks but the show is pretty good. Aka, this movie blows. You must have missed the explanation. He’s being stalked by the schizo chick. All the writer had to do was have Jensen say, “I have a spare battery in my pocket. I don’t know how much juice is left, though.” It also makes you wonder how the mutants have survived on such little food for so long. Best of 2023 is damning with faint praise. “The recipe for the cake was good but it turned out awful. Best recipe of the year!” I pity you, if you watched this shitty sci-fi movie and didn’t think it was outlandish for a whole host of reasons. What must your life be like! That’s a lot of work to say “no you’re wrong” while demonstrating the OP was right…. View all replies >
