Ridley Scott Has a ‘Fantastic’ Cut of ‘Napoleon’ That Runs Four-and-a-Half Hours and Features Way More Joséphine

Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Napoleon” clocks in at a whopping 158 minutes, but even at over two-and-a-half hours a lot of material was left on the cutting room floor. In the September 2023 issue of Empire Magazine, Scott reveals that he has a “fantastic” cut of the movie that runs nearly four-and-a-half hours.

As reported by Empire, Scott’s near 270-minute “Napoleon” cut “features more of Joséphine’s life before she meets Napoleon. He’d love Apple (who funded the film) to eventually screen it. But what they have now is hardly slight. ‘It’s an astonishing story,’ Phoenix says of Napoleon’s life. ‘Hopefully we captured some of the most interesting moments.'”

Holy crap. I'll have to wait and see how good the theatrical cut is, but if it's as good as the trailer makes it seem the 4.5 hour cut might be worth releasing.

This is currently my most anticipated film of the year. I can't wait to go see it.

Mine too! It looks amazing. This is going to be a good one.

Hopefully the director's cut will get a Blu-Ray release.

Is this gonna be another Blade Runner situation where we end up with a bunch of different cuts of a really good movie?

reply

I hope its not Exodus: Gods and Kings kind of situation, where the movie was clearly cut too short and roles of big name actors were reduced to cameos.

reply

I will most likely just wait and buy the 4 hour dvd.

Here is a wild idea. When filmmakers have a script for a four hour movie, make two movies.

reply

Eh we'll probably get it with the dvd/blu-ray release.

Too bad, Ridley has a tendency to cut his movies too short. On Black Rain audio commentary he said he gets easily bored with his own material and cuts it out, or something like that. Producers of Black Rain even insisted Ridley to put some of the fantastic stuff he shot in Japan back to the movie...

That's just 1 hour longer than the theatrical cut of Killers of the Flower Moon.

A four hour and ten minute long directors cut is confirmed to be coming to Apple TV+. It has been slightly shortened from this four and a half hour cut.

During an interview with Total Film, Scott revealed the extended cut is heading to Apple TV+ and is still over four hours long, despite attempts to cut it down.

“I’m working on it,” he said. “It was four [hours] 10 [minutes] this morning. And so what will happen is, we’ll screen [the theatrical cut] first with Sony, and then it has its run, and then the perfect thing is that [the director’s cut] goes to streaming, and we have four hours 10 minutes.”

Which version will we get on blu-ray and dvd? I hope its both, but if I had to choose, my pick would be 4+ hrs version.

The very sad and unfortunate thing is that, in this day and age, a home video release is not even guaranteed.

But provided the film does go to Blu-Ray, I hope we get BOTH cuts.
