France are NOT a footballing country. Only became one in the 80s off the back of Platini. Then, when they failed to qualify for '94, they quickly started importing Africans in a panicked response to hosting in '98. It simply wasn't ever popular there in the same way it was for the rest of Europe. Romania have won as many champions league's as France. One. ONE!

shareTheir team has been "ethnic" for decades, that´s because of historically lax immigration policies and France being a colonial power. It has been a benefit to their football team but has been a massive detriment to the country itself. Zinger is making out like they deliberately poached players from overseas. There are many 2nd, 3rd generation players that were born in France, but have foreign heritage, that doesn´t make them any less "French".

Let's simplify (because it's apparently necessary) and focus on the French league's history. How many champion's league and UEFA/Europa titles do they have? You know, one of the major leagues of Europe that have loved and cherished the game as part of their culture for MANY MANY decades. Count 'em.

Well, while you were learning that your eyebrows are a social construct, the rest of us were learning that football in France has never dominated as a sport, its clubs having no impact on the European stage, its gates not comparable to those of the big four, and its international reputation almost non-existent. Platini alone dragged the country into caring and he was instrumental in getting the world cup in '98. THAT (and the five years preceding it) was the moment they utilised the popularity of the sport in minority communities.
In fact, France probably has more in common with the US (your home country) than most European states in the sense that it relies upon the game's popularity among minorities.
There is a reason why they have only one European trophy in over 70 years of European competition. Ask a more intelligent person to help you understand why. The good news is, that's the first person you meet.
