Mispronunciations

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but everyone in this film seems to be using the incorrect pronunciation of word Harkonnen. It should be pronounced as Har(cone)in with emphasis on the 'cone' part, which was the way it was pronounced in the 1984 film.

Har(koe)nin is another good pronunciation.

Ha Ha yes Hybrid, if they can't get the correct pronunciation of tomato right, what chance have they got with Harkonnen.

It is a word without standard pronunciation or pronunciation guide, so how do you know you are pronouncing it correctly?

reply

Exactly it was a tad irritating hearing the way they pronounced it now

It’s always been, since the book cane out, that you get 10 people in a room who’ve read the book, that you’ll get 10 different ways to pronounce everything in it, from gom jabbar to Bene Gesserit. That’s just how Dune is.

reply

As I read the book:
harKONin
Ghooam Jabbbar
Beneh Jesserit

Beast Rahban
Leeto
Ahtreahadees
Ahraaakis

reply

Hee! Told ya so…some of mine:
Har-KO-nin
Ben GEZ-er-it
Mo-ahb Deeb
Uh-RAK-kiss
Uh-TREE-dees
Gom Juh-BAR

reply

It's super minor but yes, I also thought that it should have been har-KON-in not HAR-kuh-nin. That was disappointing. Most of the movie was great though.

reply

True dat. I noticed that also.

It was the Lynch version that had it wrong.

Villeneuve took the time to listen to Frank Herbert's Battles of Dune album and, for the most part, used Herbert's pronunciation for the places/houses.
