will this make over 900m domestic?

maybe

reply

That's a tall order, especially with theaters either closed or at limited capacity in many regions, but it's not out of the question. It's a great movie, and that goes a long way towards generating ticket sales, because many people will pay to watch a second or third time. We'll have a much better sense of where it's headed in a week or two, but just under $300 million in four days is a pretty good start.

As a comparison, The Force Awakens made $288 million in its first four days, $9.2 million less than No Way Home. The pandemic, and the rise of streaming films at home, may take its toll, so I don't expect No Way Home to continue to outpace The Force Awakens. I think any domestic gross over $500 million is a success beyond what anyone could have imagined before the film was released, and $700 million plus is certainly in play.

reply

nothing is closed/limited in the US , at least yet

reply

That is not true. I don't know which cities have what policies in place, but I know in San Francisco you aren't allowed in a theater unless you are vaccinated. I don't know which cities or state still have restrictions on the number of people allowed in a theater, but even here in wide open Texas a number of venues are limiting crowds to lower-than-legal-capacity. I believe some of the more left-leaning cities have more stringent policies in place.

reply

not true, can provide a negative test upon entry , 90% are vaccinated in SF anyways

reply

Not in the Bay Area. You have to provide proof of vaccination in SF and LA, and likely elsewhere. A negative covid test is not sufficient. I don't know what % of the Bay Area is vaccinated, but likely far less than 90%, and probably closer to 50%.

reply

lies , 50% is a joke

reply

We have no way of knowing. The media reports what they want to be true, not what is, and the average citizen has no source for any verifiable info anymore.

reply

You're kidding? right? Reporting false news is a crime

reply

You trust what your TV tells you?

reply

We must or we lose all our hopes in humanity , might as well live in anarchy

reply

So is it 61-70% or 70+%? More than LA. What's that covid denier counter top right?

reply

It is a moving target though. As soon as a new booster comes out, no one is fully vaccinated. It is an unwinnable shell game.

reply

absolutely not.

i don't feel too comfortable saying where this will land in north america - i'd feel more confident giving a number after next weekend - but i'll be very surprised if this goes past ... say... $650 million. which is a great number anytime, and an astounding one in our current moment.

but if this makes $900m, i will eat my shoe werner herzog style, film it and post it on youtube. i promise that right here.

reply

Hope you have that spicy mustard ready. . .

reply

i still feel pretty comfortable i'm not going to have to start googling 'how to eat a shoe' any time soon!

i love spider-man, and i really enjoyed this movie a lot. i'm going to try to get out and see it again at least one more time. they're getting my money. i'm an easy mark.

and i don't know where this ends up. but...i'm still gonna stick with my $650m north american prediction, though that's probably the floor for what it could make.

reply

I really liked it too. Definitely gonna give it another watch.

It's gonna hit a billion WW tomorrow. Astounding numbers, given the current state of affairs. I think 900 domestic is in reach, but we'll have to see. . .these are truly crazy times.

reply

$900 million does seem unattainable, especially with some markets running at limited capacity, requiring proof of vaccination to enter, or closed altogether, and potentially more stringent restrictions looming on the horizon due to the omicron variant.

It's worth nothing that The Force Awakens, to date the only film to earn $900 million+, hit $440,181,717 on Christmas Day, its 8th day in release. No Way Home is at $405,481,855 after 8 days, though it's worth noting that Christmas Eve is a slow day at the box office, so that skews things a bit. Comparing the two films' first six days:

No Way Home: $356,531,855
The Force Awakens: $363,460,329

shows them to be a bit closer, but with The Force Awakens starting to pull away. No Way Home was ahead on a daily basis through the first five days.

In any event, I don't think No Way Home will top $900 million. Topping $800 million still seems possible, and the film may end up 3rd all time, below Endgame and above Avatar, which is still an amazing feat for a film released during these times.

reply

I'd say $800m, $400 in first week. As long as it beats Avatar I'm happy.

reply

It's $330m on Tue, so around $390m first week. Two holiday weekends coming up.
Will WW gross be closer to closer to 1.5b or 2b$? https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl2869659137/

reply

If I had to bet I would bet on: No.

reply

I’d say it’ll crack $600 million domestic for sure but likely not $700 million. I’ve been wrong before though.
