From the looks of it they could have simply moved out of the way and avoided being crushed.

True. Ten feet away was fine, it wasn't the whole ceiling or the floor above them coming down or anything.

Given the choice between a relatively quick death of a falling rock to the head and surviving in there just to get introduced to Drogon when they find you the next morning, I'll take the rock thank you.

I am not sure that they had that in mind at the time of their death. They made as if they were trapped and that the entire ceiling above them was collapsing and that trying to avoid being crushed was futile.

It looked like there was light at the top of the tunnel, and the bricks were small enough to move by hand (as Tyrion did), so, they could have gotten out IMO.

They should have contracted the same smith who made Arya's plot armor. She survived having a tower fall on her. They couldn't survive a few bricks.
