Hasn't this series...

Been pretty nice, all in all? I'm happy with s8, too. One more ep to go and then we'll maybe never get to see a fantasy series like it again.

They are working on at least one Game of Thrones prequel series and Amazon is producing a series based on Tokien's Lord of the Rings universe.

For seven seasons, it was the best Fantasy Genre story ever put on film!

Too bad about season 8, really.

reply

Agreed. I was really looking forward to rewatching this after it ended, but this last season has ruined that. I wanted a satifsactory ending after eight years, but that (literally) has gone up in flames.

I don’t feel that Season 8 is THAT bad.

It is disappointing to me because they rush things, but that also holds true to some parts of Season 7 – Highgarden AND Dorne were removed from the game in what, 5 minutes?

Most of the series I’d rate 8.5 to 9.5 out of 10, while my overall rating for S8 (so far) would be something around 7. Which IS disappointing because I hoped for a fulminant, brilliant ending… but still is much better than most things I’ve seen on TV.

Now, I just hope that they set some things straight in the final ep and don’t trash it totally.

(Trashing it totally would be something like, say, Bran waking up and realizing it all had been just a fever dream after he was pushed from the tower…)

I never read the books but I was throughly entertained by this show until about the last 4 episodes of this season.

You simply can’t wrap a show of this magnitude up in six episodes. It needed a slower burn approach where we saw Dany’s decent into madness. The story is mostly solid but how it’s executed is rushed and sloppily written.

The actors, directors, musicians, visual effects artists, set designers, costume designers and heck even the writers of the first 2 episodes of this season (which I mostly enjoyed) seemed to turn up and make the best show they could.

I don’t think D&D turned up though, the last 4 episodes of this show seem like an afterthought for them, like they had Martin’s plot points and instead of finding exciting and logical ways to tell the story they brainstormed some ideas for their Star Wars trilogy instead.

D&D adapted the five books to a level that made this one of the greatest TV shows ever made. Okay it went a bit downhill after they ran out of book material to adapt (mainly noticeable in the dialogue) but it still was entertaining and fairly well paced, although season 5 did feel like they were stalling a bit in the hopes Martin would get that sixth book out before season 6 began production.

Regardless they did well and the show remained a critical success until this rushed final season. Maybe I should have lowered my expectations but I honestly didn’t think HBO would let this happen to their biggest show.

At least they wrapped things up. And Arya remains the best character forever.

IMHO the late greats Tywin Lannister and Olenna Tyrell were the best characters, but there's something for everyone in this show.

I'm trying to appreciate how incredibly good it was for seven seasons. And to have a laugh over all the fandom drama.

Man, if done right, like GOT Seasons 1-4. The Dark Tower series by Stephen King could definitely be just as epic, just as bloody, & just as entertaining, etc...as Game of Thrones was.

Plus, King already finished his 7 book series.

reply

The Dark Tower movie was bloody awful and obviously aimed at young teens. If that’s what a series would be like, it would run on FreeForm, now that they’ve ended their Shadowhunters series, and not on HBO. HBO wouldn’t touch a production like that.

Dude... That movie was absolute trash & nothing at all like any of the books. Anybody can turn a good book into a shit movie. Idris Elba was completely miscast..& they tried to take little things from 7 books then added a bunch of cheese new stuff so the audience could “relate”. Literally the worst Stephen King adaptation I’ve ever seen - from a series most fans agree was his best work.

Like I said, if done right it could be just as good, or better than GoT turned out to be - since it’s actually finished.

Don’t judge a 7 Novel series (just like GoT) on one horrible movie written & directed by some nobody.
If you’re a reader - check it out.
The audiobooks by Frank Muller are amazing.
