remember b4 it came out?

That summer there was Batman, Star Wars and WOTW. Sure a full on serious version of Batman from the Memento director was intriguing and SWIII was the (seemingly) final SW movie ever (&the prequel everyone wanted to see).. but this was

Spielberg. Cruise. WOTW

WOW

It literally couldn't get any bigger than that.

-Spielbergs 3rd alien visitation movie following classics Close Encounters & ET (but his 1st to deal with evil aliens).
-Cruise the biggest movie star of the era.
-The most famous SciFi/alien story of all time (previously only filmed once b4 in the 50s)

There'd been rumours of it before but it almost came out of nowhere (think Spielberg & Cruise decided to make it quick when other projects they were involved with fell through. Also I think SS had been planning to do it since the 90s but ID4 had basically done its own version of WOTW mixed with V) so that shelved it for a while so when it came out it was like wow where did this come from?!

Well it was an extremely successful film and easily my own personal favorite Speilberg from the 2000's.

I don't know what your trying to do here.

The film was a big hit.

This was defiantly disappointing compared to the other two you mentioned (Batman and SW3). As people have said in other threads it was hard to accept Cruise in the everyman role. Everyone in the cinema wanted to bitch slap the teenage son and it was a really silly scenario having the alien pilots land in ships that were buried 1000 or years ago.

The main thing I remember from right before it came out was that Tom Cruise was being a total jackass in the media, flipping out on Oprah's couch, talking shit about psychiatric medicine, being a major scientologist dickhead. I just rolled my eyes, but my girlfriend at the time was so disgusted she refused to see the movie, pre-Twitter cancel culture. We ended up seeing something else and I went to WotW later without her.

Tom Cruise was, indeed, going through a jackass phase but to this day, I find the first street attack scene in War of the Worlds to be sublime. The lighting, the eerie look of the Tripods, everything is on-point. I look past most actors and their bullshit. I mean, Mark Ruffolo is a walking, wet, dripping cunt - but I totally like him as Banner in the MCU.

That's the spirit!

While not a perfect film, it has a lot I liked. If they ever find a way to edit out the annoying son, the movie will get at least one more full point. And that scene with the crazed Tim Robbins should be cut, too. Another full point. And I still don't like the idea the Martians were deep underground, no matter the explanation, I've heard them all. It doesn't make any sense.

The film looks great. The effects are appropriately awesome. Tom Cruise delivers a superb performance.

But it's still not as good as the 1953 adaptation.

I remember that summer too. My family was living in IL at the time and we had a minor drought going on in the area. It was particularly a problem because we had moved into a new house with no grass in the yard, so that spring, we had set down sod in that skinny front yard of ours, and sprinkled grass seed in the backyard. I spent all summer watering the living daylights out of that yard to keep it alive during the drought, which was unusual for our area.

I remember those other movies coming out and seeing them in theaters. Either that summer or the summer after, I made dad a birthday cake with a "Revenge of the Sith" theme to it.

We weren't exactly happy about this film because we got sick and tired of Dakota Fanning screaming her head off for most of the movie. Plus, it seems they stole some story elements from that cheesy 50s version of the film.
