A manly man like Jack doesn't leave a toilet running

He fixes it immediately, or if it needs a part and he doesn't have it he turns off the cistern cock so it won't fill. What an idiot.

Thinking about this, I have no choice but to agree. This movie is not well written, we're TOLD what the characters are, but not SHOWN them to be what we're told.

Another similar example is how he doesn't keep his cover very well; he doesn't seem to even remember that his cover is supposed to be a botanist or whatever, and thus understand the preciousness of the flower gift he's given.

He basically IMMEDIATELY blows his cover by under-appreciating that gift that a botanist would and should be completely and utterly delighted and excited by. Just ONE example, this movie is filled to the brim with similar oddities and contradictions between what we're told and shown.

At minimum he turns off the water. I know next to nothing about home repairs and even I would know to do that.

Also, Jack doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would keep his septic tank "almost full". He would have had that emptied once he realized it was getting close to full.

Good point.

Also on that, they were having a wedding at the house soon with one would assume a good number of guests, he'd surely make sure there was plenty of reserve space in the septic - and that all the toilets in the house were in good order.

A man who doesn't enjoy the company of mice will keep a cat. Women did not domesticate cats, men did because they eat pests that dogs are too big to catch.

I was just citing the cliché corresponding to the unspoken rules of machismo.

I have three cats, but I don't keep them for the purpose of killing pests (although they do that). I just enjoy their company to that of other pets. Jack (De Niro) in the movie gave one good reason.
