In fact, I think he's underrated in general. Sure he's been phoning it in lately, but he gave some great performances in the 90's. This movie wouldn't have worked at all if his performance wasn't top notch. I've seen way worse performances get nominated and even win Academy Awards. Take a look at Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine or even Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this year. Both unremarkable performances that won Best Supporting Actor.

Alan Arkin and Brad Pitt were both great in those movies ya butthead.

Bruce Willis was also great in Sixth Sense and arguably even better in Unbreakable

Alan Arkin's performance in particular was painfully unremarkable. The character required no depth or nuance to play. Playing a disgruntled grandpa is not a stretch for Arkin.

He is very good in the film - along with Nobody's Fool and Twelve Monkeys, probably his most impressive performance.

On another note about what you said about worse performances winning, I automatically think about Jack Palance winning for City Slickers and Km Bassinger winning for L.A Confidential. Bruce Willis in the Sixth Sense is better than those.
