Ken Jennings

I thought he did a good job hosting.

reply

Absolutely.

NOW,HE JUST NEEDS TO GROW A MUSTACHE!

reply

Agreed, he was quite good. Especially since he had such a thankless task in following (but never replacing, as he himself said) Alex Trebek.

reply

I just saw it. He seemed a little stiff, and I think he needs to project more personality. Of course he has a very tough act to follow. Trebek had been hosting various things for over twenty years before he even started doing Jeopardy. Jennings has never done anything like this before, has he?

If the fans give him room to grow into it, he might get the permanent gig. OTOH, there are a fair number of Jeopardy fans who strongly dislike him, and that could impact the ratings. The last I heard, another possible guest host was Katie Couric. I'll certainly tune away when she does the show, but she'll be tough competition for Ken; she's certainly got more experience in front of a TV camera. But as far as I'm concerned, anyone but her.

Ken Jennings proved this week he should be Alex Trebek's successor as Jeopardy! host

Jennings was "perfectly fine" as the first interim host of the post-Trebek era, says Kevin Fallon. "For those of us reeling and skeptical in the wake of Trebek’s absence, that’s a ringing endorsement. He basically is doing an approximation of Alex. He’s not yet as articulate, nimble or effortless. He’s starting to pepper in those Trebekisms, little asides and explanations for why things were wrong. But he’s still missing the ease. How can you be authoritative and wily at once? It’s why the word singular exists, and why it’s used to describe Alex. Jennings needs to be more present. He’s nervous! It’s understandable, and there’s a learning curve that should be allowed to get over that."

One of the problems Ken has is ... Alex was a handsome guy. He was a broad chested, self-effacing hockey fan, the kind of guy men admire and women desire. Ken, for all of his qualities, is neither.
I like him okay, he's nice enough, but I'm not thrilled with him.
I thought maybe Dan Patrick from Sports Jeopardy might move into the slot, but he likely has his own issues that prevent it.
Which is to say, being the host of a nationally syndicated Game Show calls for a delicate balance of wit and fondness for the audience and the process that an otherwise intelligent person might not enjoy.

I prefer Kat Dennings.

reply

Agreed. But ,moving forward he needs, actually the show needs, to stop the reflection on the past and consider the present. I think they started to do that. There will be no other like Mr. Trebek, and we know, and appreciate your adulations. Now. Move on.

Funny thing, though...my sister and I both thought his voice was too high lol. Maybe we should have James Earl Jones do a voiceover. Think of it..."Our categories tonight are" in that voice. Whoa. I might not want to buzz in for fear of a wrong response :)

It's too soon to move on from Alex. He is one of the most beloved figures we have and we should remember him for a nice respectful period.
One week from his last show is WAAY too soon. ymmv

reply

Yes he is very good but his voice is too thin. There's no resonance.

But we have no standards these days so he'll probably get the gig.
