Was Frankie Miles gay

Freddie Miles

I don't think he was gay as such. I do think he would have accepted some m/m sexual activity if drunk. His gaydar was certainly more finely tuned than Dickie's; he suspected Tom was gay immediately.

reply

You're absolutely right; that is how I see him as well. Except, I don't think that his gaydar was any stronger than Dikkie's. The difference is, Freddy would name right away. Something tells me that he would throw the name 'queer' with some frequency and, as a perfect example of 'cream of America; rich and thick', openly gay people would be severely be looked down on and ostracized by him. At least during waking hours because, when no one was watching, Freddy would be the first to partake of the forbidden fruit, so to speak.
Dikkie's, on the other hand, would never name it, and ignore it. He was a narcissist in the truest form. He wouldn't normally partake, but he would regularly enjoy encourage being an object of admiration, love and desire. Like a Roman Emperor, he'd look down on his subject with a sort of neglect, though not malice. And just like venerated ruler, he'd bask in the love, genuflexion and veneration of his loyal subjects. And in Dikkie's world, everyone was a subject to him; making Tom among the most ardent of those.

"he suspected Tom was gay immediately" How so? just wondering because I don't remember Freddie every bringing this up.

reply

...the knowing way he said, 'No, you do know your ass from your elbow'.

reply

I'm pretty sure that was Freddie strongly hinting that he understands that Tom tries to take a social advantage over others while appearing ignorant/inept. Out of any human traits that Tom exhibits the need for a bit of sympathy is his most endearing quality. Think of that what you will but it's true. It's what keeps Tom in good with his latest mark even when he does things that cross the line of being awkward to being a creep.

As much as Freddie is an ass and I didn't feel too bad at his death he was right about Tom.

reply

That just means ‘you’re not the clueless innocent you pretend to be, you know what you’re doing but you don’t have me fooled’, the use of the word ‘ass’ doesn’t refer to homosexuality, it’s just a figure of speech.

reply

He just seemed homosexual to me Freddie anyway

reply

He was not.

reply

He sure sounded like a deeper voiced version of the late Edward Everett Horton (1886-1970).

He sounded somewhat gay to me (not that EEH WAS.)

reply

I’m watching it now and every male in this film seems gay..

reply

they ruined this version of Ripley making him gay. watch the original movie called "Purple Moon" to see the "real" Ripley how he was intended to be according to the novels.

reply

I definitely will! Thanks for the recommendation!

reply

The homoeroticism added a lot to the film and the story I thought. Without it Tom's motivations aren't very clear. It helped you understand Tom's infatuation with wanting not just to be 'around' Dickie but to BE Dickie himself.

reply

Yeah, this is one of the rare occasions where being a homosexual actually helped evolve the plot and unravel some layers of complexity to the on-screen characterizations.

Dare I say, it was gay done the right way.

reply

Is it really Purple Moon? I looked here and on IMDb and the only reference I could find to anything called "Purple Moon" was a sci-fi project that's been flapping around since 2017.

Here ya go:

Also, check out "Ripley's Game" and "The American Friend" , both are great takes on Ripley as well!
