You ever heard of an apartment complex that didn't allow kids?

Al's Studio Apartment complex didn't allow kids. You heard of that being a thing anywhere?

reply

I have not.

In those communities for retirees and senior citizens, you have to be over a certain age.

In an old I Love Lucy episode, the Ricardos got in trouble when their baby, Little Ricky, cried all night and kept awake an elderly neighbor. It was called "No Children Allowed". Their lease stipulated that no children would be allowed to live in the building. There used to be places like that.

reply

up to the 70s or 80s it was commonplace.

If there was a place like that near me, I'd be living there now!

In this state at least, prohibiting kids is thought to be discriminatory, at least outside of designated senior communities. But then, there's a lot of areas in my state with serious housing shortages, some places have laws against discriminating against child-infested families as what landlord wouldn't rather rent to responsible adults who are capable of keeping quiet and looking after their homes? So there are laws guaranteeing that families with screaming, obnoxious, neighbor-bothering children will be able to find a place to live.

I live in Illinois and live in an apartment complex where my last next door neighbors had kids. One was a 7 year old girl and one was a 15 year old boy. I wasn't annoyed by them. I once heard their mother say to the older 15 year old boy , "Because you did this bad thing no more Friday the 13th movies for you." I of course had no idea what he was getting punished for though.

I have a couple of toddlers and their idiot helicopter parents living in the unit next door right now. They ARE a nuisance, cant help being nuisances, and it'll take them a decade or so before there's any hope of civilizing them.

Face it, small children are undesirable tenants. Particularly to their neighbors.

reply

I'll agree. I myself wouldn't want to hear a kid crying when I'm trying to sleep and have work at 7 the next morning.

Probably got caught masturbating.

If there's places that don't allow pets, it would make sense that some wouldn't allow kids. It's not very commonplace where I live, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were a thing somewhere else. A lot of young kids are way more destructive than cats or dogs. Not sure why places require pet deposits and not child deposits.

As a former landlord, I can tell you that pets do a LOT more damage than kids. When tenants move out with kids, there might be some drywall dings to patch before painting for instance, but I've had to replace a full unit's 1 year old wall to wall carpeting when pets have had their way with it. I've had to replace some doors from bad scratching as well. I've also had to pay extra for professional cleaning services to mitigate the smell. Try renting an apartment with kitty or doggy smell. Won't happen.

I'd take kids over pets any day.
