Do You Think Jules Really Had a Girlfriend?

Or was that just part of an act he was doing for Brett?

Jules: Well, if you like burgers, give them a try sometime. Me, I can't usually get them 'cause my girlfriend's a vegetarian, which pretty much makes me a vegetarian. I do love the taste of a good burger.

reply

Yes I believe he had a girlfriend. I don't see what the point in lying about that would be, especially concerning something so particular as to being practically a vegetarian because his GF is.

Sounds like from his comment his girlfriend is fairly influential in his life, which falls in line with how he and his partner act; he the more responsible, settled one of the 2, probably at home taking care of his lady, and Vincent, single and more careless, out getting high on drugs while doing extra work for his boss.

reply

Interesting. I figured that guys in Jules' & Vincent's line of work might be prone to invent stories either to calm or distract their adversaries.

Never thought of a hitman having a stable home life, but I suppose it's plausible for Jules. Might also explain how he knew Jimmy who seemed like a pretty average suburban dude.

reply

Plus, although I don't believe it's mentioned why Vincent is picked to be Mia's escort, or why he went over to Amsterdam, Jules being attached and settled and Vincent not might help to explain why Vincent is doing the extra work he appears to be doing.

reply

I bet Jules' girlfriend wasn't going to be happy once he told her he was planning to "walk the Earth like Kane from Kung Fu."

reply

In real life, hit men and similarly dangerous guys have had girlfriends or even wives.

reply

Do you think they're honest to their significant others about their work? Or do you think it's the old "construction business" line?

reply

They both seem like they’d be pretty up front about what they do.

reply

Any dude who's ever had a girlfriend or a wife knows Jules is not lying.

reply

I dated a vegetarian once...didn't last long. Very nice girl but the attempts to "convert" me grew pretty tiring. I could handle meatless days several times a week but not every day.

reply

I love meat too much to date a vegetarian.

reply

Pro-Tip: Vegetarians love meat, too, and they'll eventually return to normalcy if you keep eating meat around them.

reply

You are way, Way, WAY too good at thinking to really believe that.

reply

I can only speak from experience, but every vegetarian girlfriend I've had became a meat-eater while we dated.

reply

That's a much more reasonable statement. To extrapolate to "(all) vegetarians love meat" from your incredibly limited sample size is simply ridiculous. Again: I've read enough of your posts to know your brain works better than that.

reply

Oh, well that was my brain making a joke. I thought my word choice made it obvious?

reply

Fair enough.

reply

My Aunt and 2 of my cousins have been a vegetarian for several years. And I have eaten meat in front of them. They haven't changed their minds.

reply

It's different if you're sleeping with the vegetarian, which hopefully you aren't in those cases!

reply

Of course not. Honestly I have no luck with women. Then again I am a conservative republican Christian who would want to date a woman who is a conservative republican Christian which is pretty scarce where I live. Most every single woman in my area is a nonbelieving leftist.

reply

How Christian are you? Waiting for marriage Christian, or church most Sundays Christian? I'm an atheist, but politically somewhat conservative. I lived in the Bay Area most of my life, so my dating pool was far from ideal for me, but like vegetarianism, I found that a lot of left-leaning women were less than firm in their beliefs, and they'd never had a chance to discuss or think much about politics. I dated many women who came into the relationship liberal, but became conservative while we dated. And of course far more who stayed liberal, but one can still have a fun night with a girl despite her politics, if you're looking for that sort of thing. ;)

reply

Frankly I believe sex should be saved for marriage and I go to church every Sunday.

reply

I suspect the kind of woman you are looking for is scarce everywhere. Hope you find her!

reply

My experience has always been the opposite. I dated 3 or 4 vegetarians back in the day, and they all returned to eating meat within a few months, or less, of dating.

reply

i think he was lying

reply

No, I don’t think he did.
Before they go into the apartment, he says to Vince “let’s get in character”, suggesting he’s playing a role rather than telling the truth.
Also, he never mentions a girlfriend before or after, even when he announces his plan to leave and “walk the earth”.

reply

Good callout! I'd never considered the "let's get into character" line in that context.

reply

Also, he uses the royale with cheese reference that he’d heard earlier from Vince, so the ‘my girlfriend’s a vegetarian’ thing was probably also just something he’d heard someone else say and decided to use.
And during the diner robbery, he says he never really thought about the meaning of the Ezikiel quote he uses (and embellishes), he just thought it sounded good.
All of which suggests he says things primarily for dramatic effect rather than because they’re true or accurate.
