Allison explained the legend quite clearly to Max and Dani. The legend was that the witches(1) would return if a virgin(2) lit the black flamed candle(3). I think it more unlikely that black flamed candle would even exist or that the witches would return, so once they all observed a black flame and the witches return, was there any doubt about the virgin part of the story?
I always figured he just didn't really believe in the curse, and when nothing would happen after lighting it, he could claim extreme prowess, inflating his skill, as teen boys are wont to do.
shareAgreed -- He already said Halloween was a conspiracy, he didn't believe in all this Sanderson Sister stuff, and it was all a bunch of hocus pocus; so lighting the candle, virgin or not, would not bring the witches back, he was just goofing around. I highly doubt he was aware he could be potentially alerting Alison to the fact he was a virgin by doing so!
