I think you overstate the case (I have seen a large number of cheap, and or bland and or stupid Dracula films), but I do think that this is the biggest, most disappointing Dracula ever. The idea of the romance of Dracula and Minna via reincarnation was was used in the Richard Matheson/Dan Curtis film, so it didn't even have the value of being original. I see what Coppola was doing; a romantic tragedy filmed operatically... But that doesn't mean I have to like it.

There's too much sexual content in Dracula Dead and Loving it to call it a children's film. Personally, I am not a big fan of this Dracula film cause I don't like the romance between Dracula and Mina. There are some cool scenes in it though. And Anthony Hopkins was excellent as Van Velsing.

Yes I agree the with you Dracula + Minna (resurrected soul) love story was stupid but the film really takes the cinematic representation of Dracula to another level for something done in 90s.
Of course another downfall of this great film is the casting of Keanu Reeves as Johnathan.
I still prefer the Hammer films and planning to watch Dracula (1979) with Frank Langella
Beware another "romantic" Dracula. There're a few good things about the Frank Langella Dracula, but it is not good overall.

Man if they only make a Dracula in the modern world horror film, something close to what they tried to do with Dracula A.D. 1972 and The Satanic Rites of Dracula.
Sadly all the good writers are gone in Hollywood.
Personally I don't want a modern day one. Too much modern technology gives the main protagonists too much of an advantage. Like you could just sprinkle garlic powder all over Lucy's clothes to protect her.

shareI agree. This movie was basically ruined by the overuse of special effects that had the opposite effect of making it a horror tale and more of an animated fantasy.
It made the movie look ridiculous. Hollywood knows all too well how to screw up a potentially good horror movie by doing this.
