90s (no apostrophe; see The Chicago Manual of Style) situation comedies were largely informed by the TV situation comedy created in the 50s, by shows like I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners, which had only one premise: husbands and wives have to lie to each other. If we’re using NBC’s 90s Thursday night lineup as a touchstone (what I call Must-Flee TV), which included Cosby, Mad About You and the vomitous Single Guy, the BEST sitcoms of the era had no husbands or wives at all: Cheers, followed by Wings. They broke the curse of Lucy.
