Julianne Moore did a much better job...

Foster's accent was ridiculous.

Moore is a great actress...Foster felt very one-dimensional. The reason the movie did so well overall is that it was a 'new' sort of film.

Sorry, had to to say it.

Not very original, but 'We accept the love we think we deserve.' Brilliant.

Rubbish JM was a terrible Starling.

Jodie Foster is the best actress working today. She was smart enough to turn down the role that Moore accepted.

EDIT And you “just had” to make your post here, on The Silence of the Lambs discussion and not on the Hannibal discussion, even though your post purports to be in praise of Moore, because it’s really not. It’s a slam on Foster.

I’m getting seriously sick of this place. It’s become overrun with pimply boys with one hand stuffed down the front of their pants. The good news is, there’s nothing there for them to clutch.

Quite predictably, Bob is gone as a poster, or an entity.

I disagree. I thought that Foster was terrific as a person whose insecurity goes all the way down, who spent the whole film trying to act secure and professional. She radiated the tension of someone who has no talent for falseness trying to keep up a façade, whose sex and age and background make her feel totally out of place where she is, and whose worst nightmare is having to let anyone see who she really is.

It's not really fair to compare her to Moore, they were really playing different people. Moore made little impression on me, but her Starling was older and more secure, she didn't have as much built-in dramatic tension.

Im not a huge foster fan but it’s hard for me and many to accept anyone else as Clarice and no I didnt really like Moore though I do as actress I really hated her as a replacement and I think Jodie did a great job despite some great critical criticism from you guys.

I never thought Foster's performance was Oscar worthy (Hopkins was though), although I never saw Hannibal so I can't comment on Julianne Moore, she is a mixed bag for me I HATED her in The Lost World but I thought she did decently in Boogie Nights.

There was nothing wrong with Moore but I preferred Jodie Foster as Starling and felt her performance fit this film better than Moore's would. Given the director's penchant for extreme close ups of people's faces, Foster has those expressive blue eyes, whereas Moore has dark brown (I believe) eyes. So just in physical terms it would not have worked as well with Moore IMO, plus as a bonus I find Foster very attractive in this.

I always felt Moore looked and sounded more like the character described in the books.
