Why is this movie so popular?

I finally watched it last night and it was alright. It's not a movie I could watch over and over again.

I see posters talking about how it's for women. I'm a straight male and I think this movie is great. Probably because of Julia since I'm not really a Gere fan. (Although I did like Sommersby)

"it was alright"

lol, you're too nice. this movie sucks.
it's a 90's movie that is popular because of being popular- there's no substance to it.

It is a cute movie with several funny moments.
I guess some women enjoyed the presence of Richard Gere in the movie and the gentlemen Julia Roberts ' s legs.

reply

Because it’s based on the age-old Pygmalion story but updates it into the modern world with charismatic stars, a good supporting cast, and a great soundtrack.

Perfect reply.

It’s by no means one of my favourites but I can absolutely understand why it was so popular.

I was just reading comments on Reddit and Julia Roberts likely played the most wholesome prostitute in film history. And yet, the movie doesn't hide the fact that her character is a street hooker being paid for sex.

I hate this film.

This may well be the most inarticulate, worthless thread I’ve encountered in over 20 years online, ergo, it mirrors its crap subject movie perfectly.

Cinderella was a whore? That’s news to me.

reply

Because it has the best performances of the 2 main actors ---- Beyond this there is very little either has done Particularly their Oscar wins
