Ray Liotta 'felt stupid' for turning down Batman

Last year, we lost Goodfellas star Ray Liotta, who passed away in his sleep at the age of 67. Now Deadline has shared a previously unreleased interview they conducted with Liotta a couple years before he died – and during the interview, Liotta mentioned that he felt stupid for turning down a role in director Tim Burton‘s 1989 version of Batman.

When asked how he missed out on being in a superhero movie when his star was first rising, Liotta answered, “Because I was an idiot. … Something Wild came out, so I was getting attention from that. My agent called me up and said, ‘Tim Burton would like to meet you. He’s doing a movie, Batman.’ There were never any superhero movies then. That was pretty much the first one. I said, ‘Are you f*cking nuts? Batman?!’ I’m going, ‘No, that’s stupid.’ Who was stupid? I was stupid because I didn’t know.“

Strange as I thought Michael Keaton was Burtons 'number 1 guy' for the role , why would he be approaching others like Ray, and Pierce Brosnan (who also said he was approached for the role by Burton but like Ray turned it down bc it was batman) unless Burton was interested in him for Harvey Dent? (not necessarily bruce wayne/batman?)

reply

I love Liotta but I'm glad we had Michael Keaton in the role.

reply

He turned down A role in Batman, not the role of Batman himself. Probably Harvey Dent or something.

reply

I could definitely see Liotta as Two-Face.

reply

Pierce Brosnan would've been a cool Batman. Keaton is an outstanding actor and he's about good in any role you throw at him.

Ray Liotta didn't have the voice or look to be BATMAN.. He would've fared better as a Villain.. Liotta's voice wasn't deep enoug and his lips were too thin.. Keaton simply had that "IT" look and pulled it off in a time when people didn't think he could do it..

reply

It's interesting you say that as the opinion at the time was that Michael Keaton didn't have the look or voice.

It's funny because I like him best as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

reply

Ray Liotta's voice wasn't deep enough for BATMAN while Keaton made it work beautifully.. If there was one redeeming thing about The FLASH, it was Keaton in the movie

reply

that opinion was before the movie came out, after it was released everyone concluded that he was perfect for the role

reply

That is true.
