Charlie's degree

During his introduction, Jester says Charlie has had a PhD in astrophysics.
What does that have to do with flying planes?

reply

i guess it means your good at physics so if some young hot-shit pilot tells you he did some impossible shit with the plane , you'd know

better than a degree in vineculture anyhow

reply

Honestly I didn't notice it when I saw it in 1986. I was looking at her legs. It could judge been in Medieval Russian Poetry for all I cared.

reply

useful for reading the stickers on captured MIGs 🤣

reply

Her Astrophysics PhD goes along with the absurdity of the entire movie.

She could also have that degree and work for Grumman, Lockheed, or Boeing etc., which would have made more sense than just being described simply as a civilian. Maybe they didn't want to mention any actual contractors by name.

Apparently, she was based on a real life person:

That I could understand.

Or make her degree in aeronautics (I don't know if there is such a thing) or something like that.

reply

well there is such a thing as overlap
and astrophysics overlaps a lot of relevent areas i would think.

Like if you told Charlie the weight of an F16 and the speed of the launch catapult and the angle of the deck , She'd be able to tell you how far the catapult could throw it if the engines didnt fire

I think the biggest issue I had with Charlie is that her astrophysics degree wouldn't necessarily make her a good fighter pilot instructor, which is how they portrayed her.

Not a big deal certainly but I remember watching this for the first time and thinking they were making up a job for her simply to add a love interest.

reply

yeah i think astrophysics was just a buzzword at the time for "nerdy brainbox type "

like "rocket Scienrist" or "brain surgeon"

reply

That's what I think. "She's smarter than you".

reply

By the clothes she wore I thought her degree was in stripping.

reply

By 80's standards she was conservatively dressed and styled.

reply

I think it means she knows about how things will travel. The NASA guy in Armageddon was talking about how you don't listen to a guy that made C- in astrophysics about how to destroy the asteroid

reply

Astrophysics deals with stars and planets, black holes, space, etc. Not much in common with aeroplanes. It sounded sciency in the 80s, though. Maybe it was a joke on "heavenly bodies?"

reply

Exactly.

LOL @heavenly bodies

I have noticed that a lot of people get Govt jobs with degrees in subjects that aren't related to their jobs.

What does Charlie even do anyway? She analyzes the fighter pilots flying and then criticizes it. When we see her at her first briefing with the TG team she speaks as if she is more of a Defence Dept analyst who is hoping that by sleeping with Mav he will give her info on the Mig and she will be able to work her way up to her next role.

Thinking about it all now, a lot of the scenes are just filler as nothing is really elaborated on or followed up. It's just a fun film.
