John G. Avildsen actually likes this more than Rocky.

Interesting.

For me, I prefer the idea of the original Rocky (A boxing story about a 30 year old guy going nowhere who gets one last chance to make something of himself), but The Karate Kid is a better executed, more entertaining movie overall. If that makes sense.

The Karate Kid is easier to watch I am a big fan of both but I can see why The Karate Kid is better and That's why John G Avildsen directed the first 3

I was able to watch the movie in theaters about a week ago. There was just so much to love when you see it on the big screen when you haven't watched it for many years. I can see why he might have said he loves Karate Kid more plus the Rocky series belonged more to Sly Stallone than him.

The Karate Kid is a better Rocky movie than Rocky is. As relatable and sympathetic as Rocky Balboa is, the motivations of Daniel to defend oneself from high school bullies, is even more relatable and relevant, even today. TKK has aged better, and it's not just the bullying. Many of the issues confronted in TKK were common high school struggles across the country, not just wealthy areas of California. There's the fact that Daniel is poor, and attempting to date a very wealthy girl clearly out of his league, been there done that myself. There's the issue of embarrassing moments with parents, who hasn't faced that?

Rocky is different. Rocky gets a once in a lifetime chance to do something big and becomes a better person for it, because he's really just a leg breaking bum up until his meeting with Apollo's promoter. Apollo himself doesn't have evil motivations either. Rocky is motivational, but not as realistic.

I prefer The Karate Kid, too. I was never a fan of the Rocky films. The most rewatchable in that series for me is Rocky IV, maybe because that was the first one I watched. It's like a feature length music video. I do like the original Rocky. I just don't think it's as great as advertised. I loved the performance by Carl Weathers as Apollo. He was so cocky and arrogant. It was great.

Who?

I think Mick is a more interesting coach character than Miyagi. Rocky has a dog so Rocky wins.

I prefer Cry Uncle

Rocky is better than The Karate Kid in every way, and I enjoyed The Karate Kid a lot. It’s a classic. Rocky is easily the better film however.
