... a β€œStar Wars for adults.”

The SW prequels were Star Wars for adults and look how they were received. How about make Dune for adults.

reply

I believe Dune for adults is what Villeneuve intends.

reply

He mentioned star wars which implies it's going to be action oriented and dumbed down.

reply

But he said he wanted to do Star Wars for adults. That would not seem to indicate dumbed down. But we shall see.

reply

I doubt this guy's gonna make a "dumbed down" movie. The audience, on the other hand, has been thoroughly dumbed down, as demonstrated by the reception of BR: 2049.

reply

You mean BR:2049 was actually great but the audience hated it?
I personally did like it. Not as much as the original but still.

reply

BTW, did you watch the video about Dune in the article? It was very interesting.

reply

No, I didn't but I'll go back and check it out.

Jar Jar was not made for adults nor was Young Anakin, the politics were part of the story but just that makes it hardly a serious film for adults. Better than the Disney films anywho.

reply

The prequels were a beautiful example of machaivellian politics. Palpatine was a political badass, how he manipulated others to achieve his goals. Who cares about jar jar, lots of movies have elements that appeal to different age groups.

reply

I can't agree with that. The first two Star Wars films are the most mature. The prequels certainly aren't aimed at adults. They're trying to be "all ages" by appealing to everybody. This pull in several directions (young Anakin in a movie about intergalactic taxes) was a contributing factor to their poor quality, and were one of many reasons they were not well received.

Adult sci-fi looks like 2001, Brazil, or Children of Men. Even the original Star Wars films weren't meant for "adults" in that sense - they're adventure films for teenagers which somehow managed to have mass-appeal; but that isn't how they were aimed.

I'm not saying adult sci-fi is better, mind. One of my favourite sci-fi films of all time? WALL-E. That's aimed squarely at children, but it's sooooo good on every level. Target demographic and quality level or actual appeal are different things.

reply

One thing on which we both agree is that Wall-E is one of our favorite movies.

reply

Look, I love the Lynch film and thought the SyFy version was okay, but the idea that they're going to try this again is ridiculous. The story is just too weird for most people and they didn't get the lingo. People thought the Lynch film was boring and slow, but they want to stretch this out into two movies?

Go for it by all means, I'll watch it. I'm just curious as to why they think it will be a moneymaker now, unless they're going to try to dumb it down for the masses.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

big name director and big name cast

reply

Very true. I'm actually anxious to see how this pans out.

reply

Thats good news. This one was always near the top of my list of movies that needed a remake.

reply

Let's hope for the best.

reply

I always do! Are you the same MovieManCin from imdb?

reply

Yes. When I signed up here they wouldn't let me use "MovieManCin", so I added the 2.

I remember seeing your name there, nice to meet you! I was Mike_Da_Rookie on imdb but i didnt post much. I just found this place after bouncing around a couple of other boards for the last year. This really looks like the closest one to imdb because people actually talk about movies here!

reply

Thanks, Mike. Nice to meet you too, and I agree with your assessment. So you're a veteran now, eh?

😎

reply

Lol! It just happened that my real first name was available to register here but I guess Im still a rookie because Im new.

reply

Well welcome aboard, Mike! The more the merrier!

Thanks.

You're welcome.

I wouldn't call it a "remake" of the Lynch film or mini-series but another adaptation of the novel like The Thing or Lord of the Rings or any film based on Moby Dick, now a remake is when it's based on a motion picture produced earlier and an original screenplay that it credits the script like The Blob or King Kong.

reply

Youre right, I see there is a big difference that I never thought much about before.

reply

I was a huge SiFi and fantasy book fan growing up, and it took me 3 tries to wade through the first book, which is as far as I cared to go/try. Kind of like communism, ideas behind the book sounded great in theory, but in practicality, do not pan-out. I would be concerned that it will require intense simplification, given its complexity, but will still miss the mark.

But I'd definitely give it a shot in the theaters.

reply

I was a huge Sci-Fi fan growing up, and still am. I loved reading the "ABC's" of literary Sci-Fi: Asimov, Bradbury, and Clarke. I also enjoyed Robert Heinlein and some others like Herbert. More recently I've become a big fan of Douglas Adams.

I share your concern about the upcoming reboot. Dune is a difficult book to transfer to the screen. Lynch's effort was noble, but flawed. I'm glad Villeneuve is going to make it two movies. You just can't cram that whole book into one movie. But I
will definitely see it when it's released. Let's hope for the best.

reply

I hope Villeneuve can pull this off.

I doubt it could ever come close to matching the 1984 version's amazing cast, sets, costumes and music, but Villeneuve will surely succeed where Lynch failed (weirding modules et inner thoughts).

reply

We'll keep our fingers and toes crossed.

He'll just fuck up again like he did with Blade Runner 2

reply

Actually I think he did a good job on Blade Runner 2049.

reply

Style over substance is just not my thing

reply

I think he did both well in Blade Runner 2049, but then that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

I can't wait for this new 2 film adaptation and the director is very talented/skilled as this could be the lord of the rings of sci-fi.

I'm a fan of the novel for 25 years since i was 12 and i thought the lynch film sucked and i disliked the mini-series as both attempts at film i disliked and this new 2 part adaptation could do Herbert justice.

reply

I agree completely.
