I just didn't get this movie at all

Marty wants his cheating wife dead so he hires sleazy slinky detective to kill them but the detective changes his mind & kills Marty instead, steals the money, & then changes his mind again to kill the cheating wife & her boyfriend. What's wrong with that detective? I just couldn't make out what was going on in this movie with so much confusion & no explanations. Sorry if I'm messing up here.

I LOVE this movie. It's hilarious. Give it another shot. One of those movies where everyone is wrong about what they think others are doing.

reply

Okay I'll take another look at it tonight since I don't work or anything & then I'll come back.

I know what you mean, it's a very good movie for the mid 80's though. Everything makes more sense after watching it 2 or more times. Gotta remember it was the Coen brothers first film, which is an amazing achievement if you ask me.

I really like it u know & it's very mysterious & a little weird & stuff but some things just don't add up! The detective takes the money after he kills Marty, ok, he should just get the heck out of dodge but he keeps hanging around & then decides to go ahead with killing the wife & boyfriend now? I notice the boyfriend kept on rambling & the wife was starting to get so scared & stuff like they knew the detective is gonna kill them. How did they know? I also couldn't understand why the detective lifted the window from behind the room. Huh? Why? It's a good & interesting movie but not enough talk to really get it u know. Do I watch it again or can someone explain some of the stuff?

reply

I won't give away any spoilers but I assure you everything will make sense if you watch it a 2nd time.

Just watched it again & still confused. I feel like somethings wrong.

"I also couldn't understand why the detective lifted the window from behind the room."

I think all of your other questions would be answered with a rewatch. But the part about the window has always bugged me.

What did he hope to accomplish by opening the window? Was he going to turn into Spiderman and go out one window and enter the other? It's questionable for someone in shape and athletic, but for someone his size and age. Nope. There was next to no ledge from what I remember.

Not to mention, you're completely exposed to the outside world in going from one window to the next. And so on . . .

"...it's a very good movie for the mid 80's..."

Yeah, there weren't many good movies back in the olden days. Nothing compared to the awesome movies of today.

reply

Uhhh..still don't know why the detective lift the window from another room. Makes no sense at all.

Remember the detective was very uptight about breaking the law and putting his own freedom at risk for others. He was never intending to kill them, he just killed Marty because he had probably had enough of doing his bidding and didn't trust him, and the cash was a nice bonus. He only decided to kill the couple when he became suspicious that they knew about him (which they didn't).

reply

I already got that part but no one can explain the detective opening up the window from the other room and then getting stabbed for it. I guess it was just to show a really really cool scene huh.

reply

Bro, he was looking for the wife

Lol, these people don't understand jack shit.

reply

amen, i love going to the cinema with a big loud soundsystem and IMAX extravaganza immersive type of experience

reply

It has some plot problems.

reply

It doesn't, you gotta look at their motivations thru their perspective,
No one in the movie knows entirely what's going on... they're all missing important information, thus their actions don't make perfect sense to the audience

reply

"...they're all missing important information...."

They're just like the less than 50% of voters who show up, each Presidential elections
