I like Bond drops a guy down a smokestack for the fun of it...

...then moralizes to his love interest about how wrong revenge is 

True, but he was almost just killed by Blofield yet again. Still find it weird that's the way they decided to end the character of Blofield with him falling down a smoke stack. Oh well that's movie history.

It's because the rights to the Blofeld character were disputed at the time. Notice they never say the name of the character. That scene was really just to needle the guy who was claiming he owned the rights to the character.

that bit got a big laugh by the people i watched this with, i thought the voice reminded of savalas' (1969 blofeld) until he starts pleading with bond, but the cat makes the greatest performance in that scene, when i was a kid i didn't connect the guy in the opening was blofeld, then as i got older thought it might be, but of course it is, his white cat, him being bald, it's just that they don't have the right to use his name, something they did do in never say never again 1983, the blofeld story never got a proper closure i guess since they lost the right to use him after diamonds are forever, and i guess this was an attempt for closure. wow, the music in this really is poorly placed as mentioned all over the board, it's like never say never again, great music makers but wrong for bond.. also people complain about moore's age in the later movies, but if it were today people wouldn't buzz about it, everybody say earlier generations just looked older, isn't that tom cruise fella sixty or something now making those mission impossible movies, someone i know thought connery was in his late fifties in his first bond when he was actually thirty. there's an actor in m's office that talks and looks like bond's boss m in never say never again, this was the first bond movie when they've lost an original actor as bernard lee passed on that year. some complain there is no chemistry between moore and the bond girl in this, i find moore had chemistry with anyone he came across with, i read jaws was considered to return a third time in this, i wonder how that would've turned out considering he ended up, spoiler, a good guy in moonraker, perhaps it was confused since this was suppose to be made after the spy who loved me, my guess then is he would play the part of the big guy fighting bond at the end of this.

Well if you remember, Bond did not seek revenge on Blofeld in For Your Eyes Only, it was Blofeld who tried to kill him in the helicopter. Bond had to dispose of Blofeld to prevent Blofeld from trying again.

I think Cubby Brocolli was giving the middle finger to Kevin McClory by dumping Blofeld down the stack at the start of the film. Wasnt credited as Blofeld but we all knew who he was meant to be. Bet McClory was fuming.

reply

It wasn't entirely revenge. Bond's job as a 00 gives him a license to kill. In other words Blofeld was put on the list by the government and it was Bond's job to eliminate him.

It's a great sequence, a wonderful start to a Bond film.
