Is This the Best Superhero Movie ever?

what say you? I think it is

It made a huge impact on superhero movie making, no question (and Reeve was great in the role). Nowhere near the best for me, but then I'm not a Superman fan.

It's a movie that came out in 1978 in a time when we didn't have all the CGI we see now in 2024.. That much is certain!!

That's an impossible question to answer.

If you want an old-fashioned movie that plays like a comic book, and is geared towards children, but can be appreciated by adults, Superman is great. It probably isn't the best, because there's not enough Superman action for kids, and the campiness and non-sensical plot / character behavior is a bit much for adults. It's still great as that sort of film, but there may be even better superhero films that fit the kids-first, adults can enjoy it recipe.

If you want a more gripping story that holds up for adults, with solid plotting and acting, but is still full of fun, colorful superhero action for kids, i.e. an adults-first, kids can enjoy it recipe, then it is severely lacking. A film like The Avengers fits the bill here, and may be the best, if that's what you seek.

That rules out the Marvel films as they are for kids and toy sales.

Most of the DC are just plain bad.

I like it but I also like other superhero movies. It took Marvel a long time to make good ones.

It was clearly the best of its time and the best for decades thereafter. But, I have to say that the totality of the MCU - until the recent downturn - has made me rethink that. The Marvel films, from Iron Man on, have at least equal value, with excellent effects, writing and acting... And, they have lacked the clumsiness of this Superman with its unfortunate comic opera Lex Luthor in the second half and the annoying time trick at the end.

The film set the standard for what superhero movie should be even with its clunky third act.
