I think Myers stole the mask from the mechanic guy

That would explained it why he has the mask on at the Myers house when Laurie drops the keys.

reply

Didn't they show him taking it off the store rack?

reply

that was in Halloween 4.

reply

Oh. Sorry.

The reported break-in and stolen mask from the hardware store works for me. I don't care that the alarm was sounding when the Sheriff was at the store later in the day.

Who says in the film that the alarm was sounding all day? Nobody.

Who says that the alarm sounding in that scene was the direct result of Michael's break in? Nobody.

Who says that the store could only have been broken into once that day? Nobody.

If Laurie is needing to drop off the key, how did Michael get in without obvious signs of a break in at the house being reported then or later on when Brackett and Loomis look around?

reply

One thing I don't get is, why would a hardware store sell Halloween masks?

reply

Because it is halloween, my hardware store sells lottery tickets.

Why do you think he broke in before Laurie got there? And maybe he was hanging about the house while she dropped the key off and then used the key to get in. Or he knew where the original key was hidden because he lived there.

reply

I think he broke in before Laurie got there because he's already inside the house when she's dropping off the key.

Well, since we're speculating things like extra keys which Michael's parents decided to leave in their hiding place and which their six year old boy knew about - maybe some ancient druid cult is behind everything in the movie. ;)

reply

I forgot about that shot where he is watching her from inside. Houses are pretty easy to break into, especially a vacant one from the 70s.

reply

Yep. I imagine a small town hardware store wasn't much more difficult to break in to then either.

reply

that's what i thought otherwise he'd have to go in some other store and be seen in public

reply

It really doesn't make sense how he got that mask before he stole some from the hardware store, to be honest.

reply

That's because you're making a basic assumption that the hardware store was only just broken into and the mask stolen shortly before the scene with the Sheriff outside it.

reply

Yes, sure, the alarm was going off the whole day and nobody noticed.

The implication is clearly that Michael stole from the hardware store. To assume the store was broken in to twice is to assume more than what's suggested.
