Does anybody else hate the Jabba scene in the special editions?

This may sound kind of corny, but it kills the mystique and ambiguity surrounding what Jabba looks like leading up to Return of the Jedi. Before that, we only heard about Jabba and by Empire Strikes Back, we see how far his reach is in terms of getting Solo. So him being shoehorned here, completely loses that entire effect.

Plus, the scene in general makes no sense. Why did Jabba send Greedo if he knew where Han was? And why would he be surprised that Han "fried" Greedo? Plus, the the entire thing is redundant anyway since this scene shares some of the same dialogue as with the Greedo scene. And you have Han repeating the same lines twice in a short period of time.

I hate that scene, for a different reason: It kills the suspense in the flight from Tattooine!

Lucas was right to cut it in the first place. Without that scene, all three protagonists are hauling ass away from Tattooine for reasons the others don't fully understand, and because they go directly from meeting each other at the bar to scarpering, it seems like they escaped both Vader and Jabba by chance, and not a moment too soon! If Han had time to stop and hold a pointless argument with Jabba, which is useless in plot terms because we've already been informed that Jabba is after him for unpaid debts, that suspense and sense of adventure is totally lost.

I think EVERYONE does. He looks awful.

It’s not a bad scene but to go back and use a CGI makes it feel out of place for a movie made in the 70s.

reply

I agree 100%!

reply

Yeah it's a terrible scene for all the reasons mentioned.

Plus it ruins the Greedo encounter as originally that scene made it seem like Jabba already had bounty hunters coming for Solo and so he really needed that money as he didn't know when he might encounter another. Now due to this scene, Greedo was just some goon Jabba sent to fetch him while they waited outside. And as mentioned, makes Greedo's attempt to kill Han really stupid.

reply

Yeah it was useless. Put all the Biggs scenes back in. Those are the ones we needed.

reply

There wasn’t one special edition change that improved these movies. Not one.

Yes.
