How do you feel about the new message boards?

I still can't believe the IMDb boards are gone! Its as if, I own a home, and then one day I come back to where my house used to be, and it is gone, sigh! This MovieChat is trying to be like the old IMDb boards, but it is still fairly different (I still can't believe I could log on with my old IMDb username and password, how'd they manage that?). And all the other substitutes are different in their own ways. I don't know if this will work, because a community is not something you can just pick up and plop down somewhere else. Its a delicate thing. What holds a community together is not something that is understood very well, I think. Its very iffy that all things come together to make a community. Not something you can force people to do. Its kind of a mysterious process. You could say the same things about making a good movie. A bunch of things have to come together to make it 'work', and probably a lot of luck is involved. Oh well...

It's so similar to when imdb first started out. It will get popular soon, and will have tons of
posters, so I'm just grateful it's here! It will probably become too "clique-ish" like imdb,
but that's to be expected.

I think we are all still feeling just a bit misplaced. It will just take time to get use to something different. I'll miss the people I use to talk with on some of the old boards. I hope I may meet some again on this site but if not I will eventually meet new people here. It will be the way it was when I first discovered the IMDb message boards.
This site is brand new and it will take time for others to find their way here. Hopefully we can discuss and enjoy The Twilight Zone together again and let's not forget the marathons! We can still have discussions on those.

I second this. People feel disconnected right now, but soon the boxes will be unpacked, furniture put in place, and it will feel like home.

These boards are already 10x nicer than IMDb ever was, hahaha! It warms my heart. Being thrown overboard together, seems to just have brought everyone closer together or bonded over a common cause/heartache!

You know after I posted this I thought of something. Why didn't they (the people at IMDb who were in charge of the message boards) just find some other group/company who would be willing to take over the care and feeding of the message boards?? Then, when you go to the bottom of the page for any film or TV series, instead of a link to the IMDb message boards, there would be a link to an external site that would handle those boards, such as this site. The MovieChat people could have made an agreement with the IMDb people that they would take over handling of the message boards. What would be the problem with that? Then the IMDb people could have just given all the message boards database stuff and perhaps the coding to handle it and this outer agency could take it and set it up just like IMDb did. And you could even have it like before, when you click on "The Twilight Zone" in the big bold letters at the top of the message boards, it would link back to the original IMDb web site. Then it would be almost exactly the same, but it would be out of the hands of IMDb. I don't understand why something like that couldn't have been done.

I never thought of that! I don't see why that couldn't have been done. IMDb certainly didn't handle any of this very well. It seems as though they didn't really give it much thought.... They certainly didn't give any of us ANY thought.

I'm acquainted with a guy who works high up a at Warner Brothers, and he said the studios put MEGA pressure
on imdb to rid themselves of the board because too much negativity was costing money in box office returns.
And think about it: WHY would imdb, which makes a fortune in advertising, pull the plug on so many thousands,
upon thousands, upon thousands, of posters??? You better believe they were pressured.

I, for one, haven't logged onto the site since the boards were dropped. Before that, I was on several times
a day.

I'm absolutely convinced that's the reason. And with Trump in office, the negativity directed at Hollywood seems to have grown, so they wanted to get rid of the boards as quickly as possible.

If WB thought the comments their movies were getting on the boards significantly shifted popular opinion, they believe the tail wags the dog. I'm not doubting your story, I'm just thinking that they need to realize that movies get bad word of mouth on message boards as well as at the office watercooler because the movies are bad.

I still subscribe to Amazon being the culprit. After all, they wanted to buy IMDb as a marketing tool. IMDb had pages for authors -- Amazon sells more books than anybody. They had several boards devoted to music -- they sell tons of CDs. Every movie page had a link to Amazon, where you could buy it or stream it. But the boards? The boards didn't MAKE money, they COST money.

The boards as they were didn't have any value. They'd need a big infusion of money to upgrade them and get enough admins to actually police the thing, and any company would have faced the same problems Amazon did in trying to get them to pay.

Because they didn't want to, didn't think there was enough money it it for them to continue the boards, and couldn't have cared less about the community that had grown up in it and used it for several decades.

It will take an adjustment for sure, but that is to be expected. Otherwise I think its a job well done!

I agree, kr-1959. The man who created this site did a very good job and did it at the right time. It's good to see so many of my former IMDb message board friends over here. In time, I think this site should really catch on. I hope people are spreading the word to their friends.

I wish I'd had enough time to investigate this board and PM my favorite boardies to tell them about this site. Unfortunately I communicated with my friends there via PM, so don't have their email addresses, and can only hope they'll be able to Google their way here.

Catbookss, when I found out about this site, before IMDb closed its message boards, I left as many threads as possible so my IMDb friends would know about this site. I have the e-mail addresses of a couple of my IMDb friends. Thankfully, I see many of my IMDb friends have made it over to this site.

It feels like I forced myself into an awkward relationship after having a really bad breakup.... and yet I'm liking how things are going. :D Although many people here rather forget about IMDb's existence, it's safe to say that we can all appreciate how this place is looking more and more like IMDb every day (bay far the most similar to IMDb than any other substitute). The community thing is very true though. This place will never truly replace the old boards, and well, it shouldn't. MovieChat might have the least members and activity out of all the other substitutes right now, but I'm certain things will pick up. In any case, while it's great to see some of the old community on different forums, MovieChat is easily my favorite.

I like moviechat. I find it enjoyable and I love coming here posting messages on shows and movies. Whoever developed this website, I thank them :)
