Gina Carano is a hero

She spoke the truth and just compared the obvious...had she compared the treatment of conservatives to any other incident in history she'd still have her job but OH NO she mentioned the forbidden group!

reply

Nonsense. She is not a hero. She is a mediocre actor and not very bright.

reply

ok Schlomo.

reply

Depends on how you define hero. Most would say it is heroic and brave to stick to your principles despite severe consequences. If that is the case, she acted heroically. Also, that she was able to make such an insightful parallel between historical events and modern day society suggests to me that she is indeed very bright. I've taught college students and only a small handful would be able to come up with something that clever.

reply

That’s your definition of clever? Someone likening political backlash to attempted genocide of an entire race of people? More tasteless than clever to me, but each to their own.

I should add I’m not personally fond of cancel culture, I just find it hard to swallow when people refer to someone as a hero for making a misguided comparison publicly that they should have known would cause them personal strife. To me that’s not heroic, just a little daft of her.

reply

Jews are not a race. Sammy Davis Jr. was a Jew and he was black. So drop the "race" bullshit. You ever filled out a job application and saw "Jew" as a check box for race?

reply

Debatable semantics. Let’s just agree for the purposes of Hitler’s Final Solution (which is what we can assume Carano is trying to align her perceived persecution with in her tweets) Jews were most definitely considered a race, which is why family lineage was traced back to decide who should be put to death.

reply

Your explanation is no smarter than saying Islam is a race, when it is a religion/ideology. Same as Judaism.

So if I convert and become Jewish and my kids are Jewish, does that make their race change if they are lily white? No it doesn't.

reply

Fine, change my original comment to “genocide of an entire GROUP of people” if you think that changes the sentiment of my actual point.

reply

No, genocide of an entire RELIGION. Chinese are doing it right now to Christians and Muslims yet the world doesn't give a RIP about it...if the Chinese were exterminating Jews and putting them in camps like they do Muslims and Christians you'd have WW3 right now.

reply

That's where you are missing the point. She didn't compare it to the Holocaust, but events that led up to the Holocaust and made it possible.

reply

Thanks for your feedback but I’m not missing the point at all, and if you can’t see how a person of Jewish heritage might find the comment offensive and out of line, then perhaps it’s you that needs a little more perspective.

reply

I know several Jews (there are plenty in academia), and I would be absolutely floored if any of them were the least bit troubled by this comparison.

reply

Oh so we’re moving on to the “I’ve got many gay friends” defence are we? You don’t need to have Jewish friends or even be Jewish yourself to know that it was a potentially offensive comparison to make. The reaction may be extreme (and, again, I don’t think cancellation is ever the answer) but if Carano herself didn’t realise it was an inflammatory comment which could compound her woes, then she is as dim as she is a weak actress.

reply

Listen, I can't keep going in circles with you, so this will be final my final response.. Jews are overrepresented in academia. I am in academia. I know several of these jews in academia. Though knowing them, I have learned they, like the vast majority of those in higher education, almost universally embrace inquisitive thought and the free expression of ideas. So I am basing my opinion on real world experience. It is *you* who are making broad assumptions about how Jews should feel and act about this particular issue without having a base of knowledge to draw from, as I am inferring from your response that you don't even know any Jews.

reply

I get it, you’re an academic, it’s hardly necessary to repeat the fact to support your own opinion.

But yes, I agree that we won’t see eye to eye on this particularly issue. That’s fine by me, thanks for the discussion anyway.

Just quietly though, I have Jewish heritage myself, not that I mention it as evidence that my opinion is more valid than yours, but merely to remind you that assumptions are never a good idea when countering an argument. I would have thought an academic would appreciate that 🤷‍♂️

reply

They are overrepresented everywhere else too.

reply

Thanks for your feedback but I’m not missing the point at all

Yes you are if you think her tweet was about the holocaust. If that is truly what you think then again, yes you have missed her point entirely.

reply

My point, if I must make it again, is that it was naive of her to think that people wouldn’t naturally assume that was the comparison she was making. At best her words can be perceived as being apologetic to Nazis: "Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbours.... even by children." I mean C’MON MAN! You think that was a wise move on her part to make such a comparison because she’s feeling personally aggrieved that roughly 50% of the population share different political views to herself?

I just think celebrities in general overstate their own importance and have lost the understanding that the nature of their trade is to appeal to people of various political beliefs. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I get annoyed by people who think they can say whatever they want without repercussions. I look to someone like Dolly Parton as extremely savvy in that regard. She never shares her personal political persuasions and, as such, retains the respect of everyone who appreciates her solely for her talent, regardless if they are on the left or right. Today’s stars could learn a lot from that lady.

But how come left leaning people can say death threats, doxx people and get away with it without as you say "repercussions"

How can other Disney employees be racist towards white people, insult fans for their political views, insinuate that illegal immigrant facilities are the same as concentration camps. Please tell me how they are safe but she gets fired for pointing out the blatently obvious.

If you have the right pronouns in your bio and rainbow symbols and vote for Biden then you can literally say what you want on Twitter with again using your words no "repercussions".

Her tweet is absolutely spot on and the people that went after her and Disney firing her has again prooved her point entirely.

What do you think it will be like in 10 years, 20 years now that the Twitter mob know they can get results through cancel culture. Do you think it will stop or get worse. Again the exact point she is stating in her tweet which everyone either missed or are to blind and hateful to botehr even looking.

It always amazes me how the ones complaining about people being nazis are the same peopleacting like nazis.

reply

Hopefully in 10 to 20 years Twitter will be a distant memory. It’s a foolish platform that, as far as I can see as someone who has never used it, has only inflamed division and hate between people who think a few lines of heated text is comparable to an intelligent augment.

I did notice you quoted just a single part of my response to somehow insinuate that I’m against people with conservative views having their say. That isn’t my purpose for replying at all. Again, I would just prefer to enjoy actors for their acting and have no real interest in whether they are conservative OR progressive.

reply

No I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of Twitter and everyone on it. If you vote the right way you can basically say what you want. That was the point i was making with the quoted text.

Twitter is a cesspool that we can at least agree on.

reply

She's a godlike creature and a genius.

reply

I agree. She had great courage, being so high profile, and I've heard Lucasfilm wanted to fire her in November, but waited. It seems Gina knew she was on the chopping block, and went out with a bang! So to speak.

reply

“so high profile” is a bit of a stretch. She was a secondary character (some might say glorified guest star) on a Star Wars spin-off show and not exactly a household name before that.

It’s curious people try to elevate those they agree with politically when they shoot their mouths off. Reminds me of the whole JK Rowling debacle, suddenly she was the greatest writer ever to a group of people who probably didn’t even read her books.

I don’t know if Carano should have been fired but let’s call a spade a spade, it’s no great loss to the show. She’s an average actress and easily replaceable.

reply

Had she jumped through the hoops they wanted her to jump through, Cara Dune would have had a spinoff, so she is hardly a marginal or unpopular character.

"It’s curious people try to elevate those they agree with politically when they shoot their mouths off. Reminds me of the whole JK Rowling debacle, suddenly she was the greatest writer ever to a group of people who probably didn’t even read her books"

It is about being courageous enough to stand up to the mob, when so many others back down to protect their income. J.K. Rowlings never voted Tory in her life and recently donated one million pounds to the Labour party.

reply

Yeah, and those who suddenly championed Rowling as the last word on free speech were the same people shooting her down a few years before when she stated that she wrote one of her wizards as a gay character. It’s flimsy support at best and shows people will champion anyone who might be considered a temporary ally.

reply

You are making huge and unsupported assumptions there. Social conservatives are not necessarily free speech loving civil libertarians. Actually, social conservatives in general like censorship almost as much as the authoritarians that cancelled Gina.

reply

Hardly unsupported. Take a look at the JK Rowling thread and count every mention of free speech by someone espousing conservative values. Take your time, there’s hundreds of such posts to entertain yourself with.

reply

Conservatives need to be re-educated to think properly.

reply

Liberals need to quit cutting their genitals off and trying to pass as being normal and forcing their sick minded lifestyles on society.

reply

They are only doing what they believe to be natural.

reply

They'll still never be a real woman/man. That's why 40% of them end up jumping off a building.

reply

Hear hear!

She is hot
