Kristen earns Best Performance by an Actress Oscar nomination!

Despite being snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA, I am very happy to see that Kristen just received her first Academy Award nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress category for her performance playing Princess Diana in Spencer (2021).

Congratulations, Kristen. This was a well-deserved acknowledgement of an amazing performance.

reply

I don't think she did very well in that film but then the film itself isn't very good.

reply

Well Diana's personal chef and bodyguard said she did a fantastic job 🤷‍♂️

reply

Natalie Portman didn't look very much like Jackie, but she did an excellent job. So, did Kristen Stewart too. She deserved to get an Oscar nomination.

I admit, Carved, that I was getting nervous after Alana Haim began getting lots of Oscar buzz after her SAG nomination, while Lady Gaga sure appeared to be the Oscar frontrunner, as she was receiving noms from virtually every awards body which hands out prestigious accolades.

So even while Kristen was an Oscar contender since Spencer premiered at the Venice Film Festival, I'm now a bit surprised that Kristen got in while both Gaga and Haim got snubbed. This proves that the SAG is not necessarily a precursor which accurately predicts which actors will receive an Oscar nom and shows how competitive the Best Actress category is this awards season, as Gaga would probably have been a lock for a nom most other years. So regardless of whether or not Kristen wins the golden statuette, huge congratulations to Kristen on making the cut!

reply

Yeah, I was quite nervous about whether or not Kristen would receive the nomination as well, LL.
I didn't feel bad when she didn't win the Golden Globe, because I have little regard for the Hollywood Foreign Press, but when she didn't even get nominated for the SAG award, that hurt. Ditto for not receiving a BAFTA nom.

Fortunately, two things kept my hopes up, both of those from Variety.
First was Owen Gleiberman's column from January 15th titled
Why SAG's Best Actress Snub May Have Done Kristen Stewart a Favor
It's a column well worth reading ...
https://variety.com/2022/film/columns/sag-kristen-stewart-best-actress-snub-spencer-1235155099/

The second was Variety's Actors on Actors conversation between Kristen and her original Panic Room mom, Nicole Kidman, which appeared 12 days later on January 27th. I loved how Nicole recalled Panic Room director David Fincher's comment about Kristen.
You can find the video of the complete 33 minute conversation at the bottom of the following article ...
https://variety.com/2022/film/news/nicole-kidman-kristen-stewart-panic-room-walkie-talkies-1235164374/

So now I take great satisfaction that both Kristen and Nicole have received Oscar nominations in the Best Performance by an Actress category; Kristen for playing Princess Diana in Spencer and Nicole for playing Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos.

Thanks for posting those links Caved. I wholeheartedly agree with Owen Gleiberman's sentiment on Kristen's SAG snub. Interestingly for myself, her performance in Adventureland likewise made me a fan of her work.

An analogy I just thought of that relates to Gleiberman's wise words, is this year's NFL playoffs where the top teams (Chiefs, Titans, Packers, Bucs, Cardinals) along with the popular teams (49ers, Cowboys, Steelers, Raiders) got eliminated. So what football fans are left with is two underdogs (Rams, Bengals) to root for, which makes this season's Super Bowl very difficult to predict the winner of, just as was the case with who would comprise the Best Actress Oscar nominees, which the vast majority including myself predicted wrong. So who knows how many pity votes Kristen received from the actors branch of the Academy which helped her garner a nom and who knows who will win the Best Actress Oscar as the perceived frontrunner has exited the race.

Since the theatrical release of Spencer, Kristen has given several good interviews, and the conversation she had with Nicole Kidman was one of them. As Kristen mentioned, Nicole Kidman is likewise one of my favorite actors. In my opinion, Kidman's most underrated performance, in terms of a role she should have been nominated for an Oscar for, was in Eyes Wide Shut. I did an edit of her performance in this film which is currently the most highly watched video on my YouTube channel with over 1.7 million views: youtube.com/watch?v=OTHCXY8wWSI

You're welcome, LL.
And yes, when I first read Owen Gleiberman's Adventureland comment in his Variety column, I definitely thought of you.

reply

I was pleasantly surprised that she got nominated. I hope she wins.

reply

That's her first nom? Surprises me. I thought she was quite good in the Clouds of Sils Maria.

reply

Agreed on Sils Maria, and she earned the French film's highest award, the Caesar award.

Glad to see Kristen on the Oscar nom list. I read earlier today that she and Kirsten Dunst were being considered, but maybe I read that wrong or that the decision was just made a bit later today. Congrats to her!

Kristen also won a Best Supporting Actress award from the New York Film Critics Circle for CoSM, which is arguably the most prestigious film critics group in the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEEskCoSq9s&t=14s

Interestingly, Lady Gaga won the NYFCC's Best Actress award this year for House of Gucci, yet got snubbed by the Academy. Just goes to show that receiving an SAG nom or winning an NYFCC award isn't a precursor to receiving an Oscar nom like it once was.

reply

Lol cmon man. She’s one of the worst actors in hollyweird. Up there with Keano.

reply

No she is not

reply

I honestly think she's a bit overrated. She can be quite good in her acting 'wheelhouse', but has very, very limited range.

reply

Absolutely overrated.

Major props to the four on Gold Derby who had perhaps the most accurate prediction of the wide open Best Actress Oscar race, predicting that both Kristen Stewart and Penelope Cruz would both get noms. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BUjtCdmLg8
Anne Thompson was spot-on in saying Lady Gaga wasn't the Oscar frontrunner when most of Hollywood appeared to strongly disagree. Thompson even called Gaga "totally fake" which understandably incurred the wrath of Gaga fans. Despite being a huge Kristen Stewart fan I honestly thought Gaga was the frontrunner and was shocked when she got snubbed. I will be paying keen attention to who they predict to win the Best Actress Oscar.

I admire Kristen and think she's more talented than trolls here and abroad make her out to be (still needling her over "Twilight") BUT I didn't think "Spencer" was her best work. I truly believe that it's being praised because it's associated with the British Royal Family which, yet again, finds another movie made about one of their members and becomes instant Oscar bait.

If I could move back time I'd like to see Kristen nominated for her role in "Cake Eaters".

I'll drink to that, BourbonKing!

I became a fan of Kristen Stewart when Speak had it's television premiere on Showtime back in 2005.
My appreciation of her work then increased when I saw The Cake Eaters at The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in November, 2007.
Largely due to her excellent performance in that film, The Cake Eaters won the Audience Award for Best American Indie at that festival.

Unfortunately, due to the depiction of underage sex, the film had a difficult time in finding a distributor. Only the popularity of Twilight enabled the film to have a very limited one week theatrical run in a few theaters at the same time it was released on DVD. Thus it never really qualified for awards consideration.
That being said, at the time, I had hoped that Kristen's performance might at least be considered for an Independent Spirit Award nomination, but obviously, that never happened either.

Since then, I have remained a Kristen Stewart fan even though that except for the last 45 minutes of Breaking Dawn 2, I never really liked the Twilight films.

Finally, I have to disagree with your assertion that Kristen's performance in Spencer is "being praised because it's associated with the British Royal Family." I believe the reason that Kristen has received all this critical praise along with an Academy Award nomination is because she gave an outstanding performance. Granted, the film has its flaws, but Kristen's performance is definitely not one of them.

While I would agree that the movie Spencer seemed to have the makings of an Oscar bait film, I too would disagree that making a film about the royal family automatically makes it so. If this were true, it probably would have received nominations for Best Original Score or Best Costume Design.

Additionally, some would argue that making a film about the British Royal Family which includes elements that would not portray them in the most favorable light, could serve as a detriment, as this may have had something to do with BAFTA juries snubbing Spencer completely. While the following article doesn't say this directly https://people.com/royals/spencer-snubbed-bafta-nominations-prince-williams-role-president/ the title: Spencer Left Out of Nominations from BAFTA — the Film Academy Headed by Prince William, seems to indirectly imply that the British film academy headed by Princess Diana's son, may have played a role in this particular BAFTA jury's snubbing of Kristen. Others have speculated that the royals weren't particularly fond of the film based on a rumor that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's boycotting of the 94th Academy Awards is due to Kristen's expected Oscar nomination. But then again, this may have something to do with royal family members shunning the limelight at a time when Buckingham Palace is again being tainted by a scandal, this time involving their uncle, Prince Andrew.

For this reason I decided to do a music video edit to highlight not just Kristen's performance in Spencer but also that of Stella Gonet who played the Queen, to show that the film did portray the royal family, especially the Queen, in grandiose fashion and from a flattering standpoint: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdUu_Nf9u5U&t=121s

In an effort to kowtow to the royal family, I mentioned in the description for the video that Elizabeth has recently become the first British Royal to reign for 70 years, while using the British royal anthem "God Save the Queen" for the background music.
