Anti-Free Speech Moron

Can't support his work anymore after he said he wants to cesnor anyone who makes fun of Jews and adovcates for censorship on Social Media. Fuck him.

reply

Where did he say this? What's the quote?

That would be pretty hypocritical of a guy who makes a living saying and doing outrageous things.

reply

When you do things in parody you can get away with it since it's based on a fictional portrayal. That being said, on my Facebook page I see recommends for groups that are claiming Trump won the election as well as other groups that call Biden a serial rapists. I don't bother to report them as I really don't care about such nonsense, but still I haven't seen Facebook ban them either.

reply

It's precisely because Cohen is a master satirist that makes me say that. If speech starts getting banned, it'll take the government 0.03 seconds to start figuring out ways to lump satire in with banned speech; it's too "dangerous".

Now, what you're referencing is false and libelous. And facebook, as a private company, are free to enforce their own rules. The linked article says Cohen is trying to make facebook liable for content posted by users, which is a bad idea. There's a big difference between legal action against speech and a private company with a code of conduct. I know there are grey areas, but that's the broad-strokes.

I'm not sure there's a perfect or easy answer to how to respond to this. I acknowledge that it's tricky when lies are being spread on social media that can, have, do, and will affect the outcomes of the democratic process, but I think that the answer might be more along the lines of consumer education (ie, pouring money into making sure users are savvy to how to spot BS online) rather than regulating speech.

And, again: I know that libel and slander are different, as are calls to violence and soforth.

reply

^This. COhen basically just doesn't want anyone to be able to make fun of Jews.

reply

Well, most of the banning I see is of phony accounts posing as real people and this has happened a lot with Trump supporting posters who pose as youth groups. There are other instances where anti-Masking groups have posted false data about the Pandemic or are openly calling it a Plandemic which is QAnon territory.

reply

If a platform wants to ban, that's their right. Then users can decide if they want to mass-exodus the platform for being too strict, or if they don't care. That's all fine by me. I've got a problem when it's government action.

Banning fake accounts is super-reasonable and not a problem.

I haven't listened to Cohen's speech directly, nor am I familiar with the law he's referencing, nor have I read anything about its pros and cons from reputable, reliable, reasonable, and expert sources, so I'll refrain from saying too much on that particular matter.

reply

Maybe listen to his full speech and see what he's about before commenting then idiot.

reply

1: I'm talking about principals of free speech generally. I think I'm fine there, yes, oh arbiter of conversation?

2: I deliberately said that I wasn't talking about Cohen, so I was clarifying my restraint on getting too deep in on it. I read the article you posted, but without listening to the full speech, I didn't want to dig in more. I felt I could comment lightly (only lightly, only as much as I did) based on the article you linked to. I was saying i didn't want to get too in-depth because I hadn't heard the speech itself, just read the commentary.

3: Don't insult me. It doesn't open up a foundation for good debate.

reply

What makes you think he'd want to stop at Facebook?

reply

I wasn't speculating on that. I was saying that the government shouldn't regulate Facebook, or should do so minimally (ie, if Facebook was literally breaking laws); that the law should not hold platforms liable for users' actions; and that Facebook can ban whatever they want, and if they're being too draconian, they'll hemorrhage users who want something more reasonable. It's their platform, they can do what they like.

reply

Don't want to dig anymore because you know what he's doing is wrong

reply

I don't really care.

It sounds like he's got a view on speech that I don't share and I think that's foolish and potentially harmful, but so do lots of celebrities and entertainers. For that matter, a lot of them have views I find bad or downright horrifying but I don't really care all that much - certainly not enough to want to have miles of "Oh, what a bugger he is!" "conversation" on moviechat. I would rather discuss free speech more generally, which is what I was doing.

What do you want me to do? Condemn Cohen? Cry for his head? Denounce him? Say he's been a naughty boy?

Why the heck do you care what I care?

reply

A great view on speech wouldn't be asking platforms to censor something he doesn't like.

reply

I agree. Why do I feel like I'm being badgered after having agreed to the idea that Cohen is expressing opinions I find negative? We share this opinion, why am I being pressed on it?

reply

Facebook and Twitter are private companies. They can pick and choose what to censor or ban.

reply

They have a tendency to choose what the Woke crowd berate them into choosing.

reply

Yeah but he also wants all companies to censor whatever he disagress with. It's dangerous.

reply

He's a Communist. Fuck him.

reply

He’s right. Fuck you

reply

Fuck you facist

reply

How DARE him to want social media companies to deplatform antisemites and white supremacists. Shame on him!
