The most overrated musician of all time?

He had maybe 2 hit songs and did the Batman soundtrack......how does this translate to “great”? That’s only slightly better than Macy Grey or Eagle Eye Cherry....am I right? Or am I right?

I do agree

Wrong Hippo! Elvis the Pelvis wins every time.

Do you suffer from low self-esteem because you seem to be questioning yourself a lot here? If you have a point, make it.

It's better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove it.

I think my original post is quite clear.....Prince is definitely a hack job that will be forgotten in the next 10 years or so.

reply

The Artist Formerly Known As Prince is forgotten already, so what's your point? It's like saying, "Pain is bad." It doesn't need a discussion.

He DID have an eye for talent, though: Vanity and Appolonia Kotero. And he did have the good taste to try to emulate a true god, Jimi Hendrix. The man himself, though, hasn't mattered in years.

reply

I think that anyone who can do that is pretty amazing. I am a half-assed musician, and it's damn hard to write a song, let alone lyrics, put it together produce, market and distribute. That said, I was not a Prince fan. I didn't really get the whole Prince things, but he did write some good songs. And I am sure not that many people would agree with my tastes in music. Even I don't sometimes.

I'll just leave this here:

Just a shame Macy wasn't available for this concert.

So basically unless you write hit songs (songs that appeal to the lowest common denominator) you’re a garbage musician?

reply

A hit isn’t determined by how dumbed down a song is, that’s naive thinking and illogical. Some songs that are very deep become huge hits and other times you get horribly written songs that blow up. It can go either way really, but what does matter is that as an artist you connect to people. Prince couldn’t get radio play because his music was straight up garbage that nobody wanted to listen to. If his music was evenly vaguely listenable he would have had more than 2 hits, that’s my point.

reply

So basically any music that doesn’t get radio play is garbage? Cool. Have fun with your limited music taste.

reply

It isn’t a matter of taste to determine if an artist is overrated or not, and if people are gonna list Prince as one of the best musicians ever then he better have more than 2 hits for crying out loud. Obviously I’m not saying that more radio hits mean you’re better but this fruitcake can’t be considered the greatest if a random stranger can barely list one of his songs, it’s all about perception.

reply

Not overrated, he was very talented. His success didn't continue because his sound didn't change with the times. Unlike Michael or Madonna, he didn't seek out the hottest producers.

In Michaels case, moving away from his sound with Quincy didn't win much love. Maybe Prince wouldn't have faired well chasing modern sounds.

reply

All his material sounds like dance music for French poodles.
