Ian Fleming's James Bond novels to get the Roald Dahl woke edit treatment

BAD move.

Dahl's biggest market is the parents of young children, who presumably have some concern for decency, but Fleming's biggest market is straight men who want to fantasize about blowing off decency, and enjoying some sex and violence.

Some depictions of negros have also been reworked or removed, but references to other ethnicities, including the use of a term for east Asian people and Bondโ€™s mocking views of Oddjob, Goldfingerโ€™s Korean henchman, remain.

reply

In a civilised discussion like this about what has been removed because it may or may not be offensive I think it would be productive to actually quote the words rather than hint vaguely and keep us guessing.

It wouldnt be racist to write the word for "term for east Asian people" in this context.

reply

The issue is the way Bond uses those terms. In one part in Dr. No he uses it as an attack on a patrol guard. That wasn't right and as I said in other post Bond is not a racist at all in the books. He will work and talk to whoever yet now and then he may use terms against the race of a villain which I agree wasn't right for him to say those things in that manner.

reply

This is just the beginning. We live in a world where Blazing Saddles is considered racist; a movie that mocks racism.

reply

NO IT ISN'T.

reply

What, no bigger outrage about this matter?

reply

I mean Bond is nowhere near a racist in the books yet gotta agree it wasn't right with the way he verbally called out particular races so I understand them making those changes.

There is nothing so horrible in the Fleming authored Bond stories that calls for this treatment.

No work of literature, no matter how highbrow or how broad in it's appeal should be rewritten for the delicate sensibility.

You can't change history. You can only strive to do better going forward.
