It is called ACTING...
When is this stuff going to die off? It is called 'acting' and all of this "you must be" of whatever identifier one is must end, too.

Imagine, all those years of drama school, then honing your craft in provincial theatre, only to play exactly who/what you already are. Gotta be depressing.
shareIt's weird. While I agree to some extent, it would be weird if Kevin Hart played Jackie Chan in a film. I guess because Fidel Castro passed as white, it makes it okay.
shareIt’s a sign of progress that performers of all backgrounds are getting work now, I think most people consider this a good thing.
I agree, Kevin Hart as Jackie Chan in, say, a biopic would be ludicrous yet Denzel played a Medieval Scottish Lord in The Tragedy Of MacBeth last year to positive reviews so who knows where the line is anymore..?
Franco in the right makeup and wardrobe could certainly be a good fit for Fidel, I’d watch this movie.
Fidel Castro didn't "pass as white," he was white. His father was from Galicia in northwestern Spain; his mother was from the Canary Islands, an autonomous region of Spain. James Franco has Portuguese ancestry.
Spain and Portugal are both located on the Iberian Peninsula of Europe.
His skin looked a little olive to me.
shareSo you think you can act a race?
shareDid I suggest that? No, I did not.
But this day and age where a person has to meet some sort of identity purity criteria before being cast in a role or it lacks legitimacy is ridiculous. To me, if an ACTOR can pull off the portrayal, then is that not the goal?
For example, there were complaints about Viggo Mortensen playing a gay man because he is not gay in Falling.
Castro was as Caucasian as Franco.
