His best major roles?

I have always enjoyed Sam Elliott - a charismatic and powerful actor with a wonderful voice that drips gravitas. Glancing through his filmography I don’t believe I have ever seen him in a leading role - in those movies In which I have seen him, he is always either a reliable supporting actor or pops up in a memorable cameo.

Of his leading roles, does anybody have any favourites or recommendations? I am keen to see Lifeguard, having heard good things about his performance in that.

The Hero was really good. I think though most people like me only watched it with having Sam and Nick Offerman in a movie.

Ah yes, that one has been on my radar, actually. I must track it down. Nice to see that Mrs Elliott Katharine Ross is also in it — I don’t remember the last time I saw her in a new movie!

Lifeguard was a good movie. And yes he did the role justice.

Great to hear — most definitely one I need to see.

He was good in that movie. It's one I own on DVD. There's just something about it...

If you can find a copy of The Quick & the Dead, I highly recommend that.

reply

Thanks! At first I thought you were referring to the Sharon Stone/Gene Hackman film, which I have seen... did not realise that Sam also had a film of that title.

Mask was iconic

Mask is a good film. It has been many years since I saw it but I still remember it clearly.

He stole "Road House" away from Patrick Swayze as an old gunfighter -- wait, scratch that -- as an old dance hall BOUNCER.
It was sad to watch him fight so well until younger men finally beat him .

Agree 100%!

A favorite scene is when he arrives at the Double Deuce, takes out a guy's knee, smiles mischievously and says, "Damn, that hurts doesn't it?"

reply

He was cool in Roadhouse. And of course Tombstone.
