WTF Happened To This Celebrity? – The JoBlo series that examines the careers of stars and filmmakers who may have fallen out of the spotlight, and tells where they are now!

Kirsten Dunst started her career at a young age, making her first big impression alongside A-list talent in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE before appearing in hits like JUMANJI, BRING IT ON and the Sam Raimi SPIDER-MAN trilogy. Outside of blockbusters, Dunst established herself as a reliable performer in projects and roles of any size. And while her recent output may have slowed as she focuses on a new family, a look through her recent career demonstrates just how UNDERRATED she really is. Nothing, she just got nominated for an Oscar.

Why did Kirsten Dunst’s career never really take off? If you looked at her in 2004 you could easily picture her having an Oscar by now. Is she difficult to work with? She has proven herself as a tremendous actress in roles like Melancholia or Fargo.

Her career never really took off. Is that why everybody knows who she is ? Stop with these stupid crap posts already !!!

She does Interview with the Vampire as a child actor.
She transitions to teenager/young adult with comedies like Dick and Bring It On.
She keeps doing challenging work with stuff like The Virgin Suicides.
She gets the female lead in the first Spider-man trilogy - one of the first superhero movies that made them go mainstream.
She keeps getting awesome projects like Eternal Sunshine and Melancholia where she gets to work on cool, off-beat indie stuff with auteurs.

What didn't take off?

Her career definitely took off, but at the same time it's also true that she faded from the spotlight as she transitioned from teen star to adult actress. She was really high-profile around the time that she did Bring It On, but I remember when I heard she was in Fargo my reaction was like, "Oh yeah, Kirsten Dunst. . . Where's she been?"

She did do the Spider-man blockbusters in that gap.

I don't think there's anything particularly unusual about Dunst's career trajectory. Most celebrities don't hold decades of being "in" or A-list. I'm not sure she was ever A-list, but that's a tiny club within a tiny club anyway. There are rare exceptions, like Tom Cruise (although even he isn't the same Name that he was a decade or two ago), but most celebrities flare and die out. Some get a renaissance. Most don't.

This flare-and-out is particularly pronounced with women, who go from playing the daughter to the lover to the mother in about seven years.

Looking over Dunst's filmography, I'm seeing arthouse movies, high-profile movies with good rep (Interview, for instance), auteurs, blockbusters, rom-coms - seems like a great career.

She looked old at 30. Her career dried up. She was so hot as a teen.
