Is Keanu the Gen X equivalent to John Wayne?

In that at the end of the day, he can only do Keanu, but he does Keanu well enough that people love him.

"John Wayne is a very, very good actor in the most highbrow sense of the word."

--Katherine Hepburn

She was right. As much as I like Reeves, nobody could ever make such a claim about him.

reply

No. John Wayne fell into a role I don't think he ever wanted to play (i.e., his public image). Keanu is in no such danger. He will never be despised by future generations the way young people today despise John Wayne (most of their hatred is born from ignorance, but the unfortunate comments in the Playboy interview are easily misconstrued, and, frankly, that's The Duke's fault. He should have known better).

reply

I had no idea that young people despised John Wayne. Why?

reply

Because they've been told to by the media and social media. John Wayne has, in death, become a symbol for all the phony outrage clueless academics have foisted on their students (who went into the world confusing that manufactured outrage for knowledge) and many of them became teachers who have been teaching John Wayne was a far right fascist, or some such shit, and, as is the case with the modern American 'student,' the kids believe it without researching and learning who John Wayne really was. I have heard many young people insist John Wayne was a worse human being than Pol Pot. And, of course, if you try to educate them about the truth, they just call you a fascist...

reply

What did he DO though lol

btw thanks for putting some effort into this but I really would just like to know what he DID that is being blown out of wack.

reply

Oh, I see. He represented American values, I suppose. That's a crime these days (and no, I don't actually know what those values are, it's just a phrase people throw around with either reverence or hatred).

reply

FFS I had to look it up.

No one hated him because he represented American values. It's beyond irritating that you would suggest that as the reason young people don't like him and you well know that because you mentioned the Playboy interview before I even asked.

Why would you say that the reason people dislike him is because of his 'American values' When you knew the real reason was what he said in the Playboy interview??

reply

Long before the Playboy article, John Wayne was some sort of symbol of The American Way, or whatever the hell you want to call it. He and John Ford supported the war in Vietnam because they thought that was "the right thing to do." This made them enemies of the youth (who were justified--they were the ones being sent to the jungle to die). The Duke even went to an Ivy League school and took the jeers of the students with good grace.

I'm neutral on this, btw. John Wayne is long dead. Some of his movies are great, some are damn entertaining. That's all he is now, a dead movie star who left some movies for future generations to enjoy. His comment in Playboy triggers the youth today because they don't understand ONE FUCKING THING about CONTEXT. Yes, he said something stupid. As Bill Burr said, NEVER ask Grandma her political opinions. People who judge people from the past according to modern morals are FUCKING IDIOTS and I am FUCKING TIRED of listening to their FUCKING IDIOCY.

Have I answered the FUCKING question e-FUCKING-nough?.

Thank you, and good night.

reply

You're "neutral" on racism = you support racism and white supremacy.

reply

Like it or not, everyone is racist to a degree

reply

Prejudiced. Not racist.

reply

No, Racist. Deal with it

reply

I'm positive you can't correctly differentiate racist, prejudiced and bigoted from each other.

reply

Haha, I'd forgotten about this exchange. I was stupid to argue with robots.

reply

What a vague and weird response that didn't answer the question.

reply

What are you babbling about?

reply

That you left out the shitty things he said and tried to rationalize it. Imagine defending John Wayne in 2023.

reply

Imagine giving a shit one way or another. Maybe find a hobby? At the very least, find porn.

reply

Porn would be more interesting than this conversation. Good call.

reply

I've never seen a more AI-generated comment than, "What a vague and weird response..."

reply

Dude, can you imagine John Wayne doing Bill & Ted's?

Seriously?

reply

John Wayne had to be held by security as he tried to lunge towards Sacheen Littlefeather, the fake native, after her speech at the Oscars.

Oh you meant in acting? Where people play pretend and get paid handsomely for it? Keanu Reeves has more charisma than Wayne. Both are limited actors, but Reeves' movies will have far lasting appeal, further than Wayne.

So no, Reeves is not as good as Wayne, he's better.

If John Wayne had played in Speed, he would have shot the bus driver.

That's a Lie

Technically Reeves is a Boomer. A very young Boomer but a Boomer nonetheless
