if he had not been in Titanic...

.. then what?

reply

Then nothing. He’d have been passed over for 99% of the roles that he’s had since then.

reply

I don't necessarily think that'd be the case. Sure Titanic was a huge movie, but I feel his performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape was far better and I would imagine more challenging. If it wasn't Titanic, he would've got picked up for something else.

I think you’re underestimating just how much of a thrust being the star of the biggest movie of all time was for DiCaprio. His subsequent fame had absolutely nothing to do with his acting skill, and the possibilities this unlocked for his career were limitless.

reply

He still would have been a good little actor just not as well known

reply

Then maybe Titanic wouldn't have been such a huge movie?

reply

He'd still be playing high school kids.

reply

He'd still be where he is now. Why do people forget that Romeo+Juliet happened? Heartthrobs did good in the 90s. Why do you think Heath Ledger, who was predominantly known as that guy from 10 Things I Hate About You, was eventually cast as the Joker?

reply

He would have made it big eventually. He made a few good films before Titanic. Didn’t basketball diaries come out before Titanic?
