Who Else Goes to the Movies a Lot?

I know box office numbers are plummeting, cinema is dying, and everyone is streaming, but I imagine some regulars on this site are still avid movie-goers. Who all goes often? I suppose often is a relative term, but I guess once or twice a week or more is what I mean.

reply

If there's a movie I want to see in theaters I'll go. I love going to the movies. I've been the last two weeks as I saw Ghostbusters and then Civil War.

reply

Not nearly as much as I like, but I do enjoy the theater. It's just the best viewing experience with the large screen and sound.

I used to go once a week and I much prefer to see a movie at a theater than on a TV but the thing that keeps me from doing it more often is noisy people in the audience. I don’t mean people reacting normally to what is happening in the movie because that is expected. But people talking loud or making other noise completely distracts me and ruins the experience for me.

reply

Where you do live that that is a problem?

reply

Melbourne, FL.

reply

I lived most of my life in California, both L.A. and S.F., and now in Texas, and that has never been an issue. Crazy that there are such regional differences in behavior.

reply

The worst experience I had was in a theater in Santa Rosa, CA about 25 years ago when Gladiator came out. There were a bunch of kids running up and down the aisles to the screen and none of theater employees did anything about it. It was during a busy weekend matinee so it wasn’t like there wasn’t anyone around to notice it.

reply

I reckon that kind of thing can happen anywhere, but it certainly isn't the norm.

reply

I'm going 52 times this year.

I rate each movie on a 0-5 scale.
If the final average is less than 2.5/5, I'm done going to movies all together.

reply

At least someone else on this site is still going to the movies. Let's hope you like what you see!

What have you seen so far? Are you only seeing new films or are going to see older films in re-release?

reply

Here's the list. I meant to only see 2024 films but I started with the Iron Claw on My birthday. Wrestling is interesting to me.

The Iron Claw - 4/5
Night Swim - 2/5
The Beekeeper- 3.5/5
Founder's Day- 0/5
I.S.S.- 2/5
Argyle - 3.5/5
Lisa Frankenstein- 1.5/5
Land of Bad- 4/5
Dune 2- 4/5
Imaginary- 2/5
Cabrini - 4/5
Late Night with the Devil- 3.5/5
Ghostbusters:Frozen Kingdom 2/5
Godzilla X Kong- 2.5/5
The first Omen- 3/5

Of the 28 films I've seen so far in 2024, only 10 are new films. I watch a lot of older films. I'm always down to see something good from back in the day on a big screen.

Not too much overlap in ours; only 4 films that we've both seen.

Migration 1.5
American Fiction 4
Argylle 2
Madame Web 2.5
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 3.5
Late Night With the Devil 4
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 2.5
Lousy Carter 3.5
Immaculate 3.5
Kim’s Video 3.5

We'll be seeing Monkey Man tonight. Hopefully it's decent.

I'm seeing Dawn of the Dead tomorrow night. I've seen it on DVD so I know what to expect, but I imagine it will far surpass my previous viewing for being seen on a big screen in a packed theater.

Cabrini is the one film you've seen that I've not that is on my must-see list. It's encouraging to know that you think it's as good as anything else you've seen so far this year.

reply

I was really impressed with the sets, costumes, and actors. It's ending is a little quick, but give me John Lithgow anything and I'm happy to watch.

From my mid-childhood to mid-teens I used to go maybe 6 or so times a year (once every second month sounds about right).

In my late teens and early twenties it was more of a 3-4 times a year deal.

I last went in 2019. The COVID lockdowns got me out of the habit of going and with movies arriving on digital much quicker these days I've never really felt the need to go back. There have been a few movies that I look forward to and almost cave in and go to the cinema for but in most of those instances when I finally see it on digital I'm glad I waited.

reply

Too expensive and the theater I usually went to is just too far to do a movie.

reply

I used to go to the movies a lot, every weekend, sometimes twice a weekend. Then it slowly became less frequent, maybe once or twice a month.

Now I usually only go to the revival theaters to see classic films on the big screen.

For new releases, I usually wait until Blu-ray or streaming, but for movies I'm really looking forward to, I'll still go to the theater, which is about twice a year.
